Dear friends- The total shown here is not what the Bala family has had to pay for Sir Thomas' care. This account has been active for over a year. They have used the money to care for Thomas for that time. Treatments and travel for treatment, cost hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars monthly. The posted amount is what has already been donated, not what they have NOW. PLEASE donate. PLEASE help this child!
Sir Thomas The Mighty (as he was affectionately dubbed by nurses on the day he was born) received his first diagnosis when he was having up to 25 seizures per day in May 2016: a congenital brain defect, called Cortical Dysplasia with Focal Epilepsy Syndrome, which may require brain surgery in Boston, MA. It is a lifelong condition.
In October 2016, Sir Thomas was diagnosed with severe Neutropenia, which is now labeled Very Severe. He is considered immuno-compromised. Every fever is an automatic emergency room visit, and possible admission to the hospital. Just recently, in April 2017, he was diagnosed with Selective Antibody deficiency, meaning he is a weak responder to over 50% of the vaccines he's received. In May 2017, he's undergoing a bone marrow aspirate and biopsy for further diagnostics.
Sir Thomas has had to endure multiple hospitalizations in three cities, and his parents have had to miss work (often unpaid) to be there with him. Over the past year, his treatments and medications have cost almost as much as what has been raised. While in different cities, the Bala's also have to pay for gas, food, and lodging.
If you donated once and would like to donate again, this would be the time to do it, they need every dollar they can get. If you can't donate, please share. They appreciate everything everyone has done for them this past year. The support has been wonderful. Money raised will continue to be used to help pay for Sir Thomas' medical expenses, including diagnostics, potential surgery, rehabilitation and transportation costs. As treatment outside of Western New York - and thus outside of the insurance provider's in-network list of providers - has become a long-term reality, money is still needed to ensure Sir Thomas receives the best care possible for his conditions. No family should have to decide when, where, and how their toddler receives medical care based upon the cost associated with the treatment. Your gifts will always be most humbly appreciated.
*This campaign has been started by Jennifer Smith, a friend of the family. The family (Matthew, Rebecca, and Sir Thomas) will be the only party to have direct access to withdrawals for this campaign. Funds raised will continue to be used solely for medical care for Sir Thomas and the family's travel expenses to/from Rochester, NY, treatment in Buffalo, NY, Boston, MA, and any other future cities he requires treatment in.
