Hudson is a 10-year-old boy from Spruce Grove who lives with his mother Robin, father Brian, and 14-year-old sister Lauren. He is a true warrior with an amazing attitude and an insatiable love of hockey! This is his story…
Hudson felt ill in October of 2018 with what seemed like a typical flu. After a few days he unexpectedly and rapidly declined and was rushed to the Stollery Children’s Hospital with a serious case of H1N1, pneumonia in both lungs, and a staph aureus bacterial infection resulting in septic shock throughout his body. He remained on ECMO life support in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Stollery for 19 days and on a ventilator for another 6 days. Because of the septic shock, Hudson was fighting for survival and his body directed all blood flow to his vital organs. This rendered extremities like his ears, arms and legs vulnerable to damage from lack of blood supply. On December 6th of 2018, after weeks of enduring multiple fasciotomy and debridement surgeries to his arms and legs, Hudson underwent a right below-knee amputation.
Hudson remained in the Stollery for months and was transferred to the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital on February 19, 2019 to continue his healing process. He worked hard every day with amazing energy and perseverance to improve his function in order to be active, independent and to get back on his skates one day.
Overall this unfortunate and stress-filled journey has led Hudson and his family along a difficult road with major adjustments expected in their lives. Changes include the need for extensive renovations to their home and ever-changing equipment and mobility aids (including additional prosthetics) to help Hudson be the same energetic boy he has always been. Many of the costs for these future unknown needs are not covered under Alberta Health Care nor through AADL as one might expect. Hudson continues to attend a multitude of required appointments with many specialists that monitor his progress and provide ongoing care - daily occupational therapy appointments, plastic surgeon appointments, orthopedic surgeon consults, ENT surgeon appointments, and many more. There are appointments that Hudson requires that have not yet commenced because of the extensive amount of time it already takes to attend all the various medical specialties. These appointments put additional financial stress on the Pedlar family as they take time away from Brian and Robin’s full-time jobs. Between the consults, treatments, recovery time from surgeries, and trying to make adjustments to their home to accommodate challenges for Hudson, Robin has not been able to return to her job and may never return to the same capacity.
Hudson’s journey has recently hit the 1-year mark and both Hudson and his family continue to face new and upcoming challenges. Hudson has undergone over 25 surgeries in the last 12 months and already has more procedures lined up. It has proven to be a struggle balancing work, school, appointments, recovery, therapy, continued home renovations, time for Lauren’s activities and time for their family as a whole. Most importantly, the Pedlars want time for Hudson to play and be a kid outside of the hospital and medical appointments.
In the coming months of rehabilitation, we want Hudson to receive every available resource and support that will help him with the long road he has ahead. Parkland Rehabilitation, along with the support of the community around us, want the Pedlars to know that whatever challenges and obstacles Hudson faces in his life going forward - we are here to back you up!
