Hello all! My name is Madelyn Miller. I just returned from an internship abroad in Uganda, where I was living in the village of Buyijja within the Mpigi district, for nearly 4 months. Healthcare was the focus of my internship; however, upon my arrival in the village I realized my purpose to be there was far greater than work experience; her name was Shivahn.
Shivahn is three years old, full of life, love and laughs. She was my little roomate during my time in Uganda. She lived with me in my village host-home and became my little shadow.
As I mentioned before, I went to Uganda for healthwork. People in Uganda suffer greatly from the circumstances that surround them. Poverty, violence, lack of education and oppressive politics adversely impact the chances of people in Uganda living healthy, happy lives. Needless to say, the emotional strain of seeing children and innocent people suffering from their misfortune was a huge obstacle for my morale during my time there.
In all honesty Shivahn was my light. She was the main reason I could see my way through the chaos and heartache. She was my everything. Whenever I felt as though I couldn't manage to complete another day (and trust me I felt like that often); she reminded me what life was all about. Coloring books in the grass, piggy back rides, evening walks and laughing (so much laughing) were the things that kept me going.
I would give the world to this baby girl if I could. Leaving her was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. With that said, I am determined to give her health, happiness and education. My co-workers in Uganda have taken her to school interviews so that she can have a SAFE and HEALTHY place she can call home. Her mother, who grew up in a village, has little education herself. She wants a better future for her daughter. I want it for my girl too. Please help me, by giving her an opportunity to thrive. Life is very difficult where she is, more difficult than you may imagine, and far more so than I could have prepared myself for.
Her school fees for an entire year will be about $900. I need your help to make sure that is covered. Additional funds will also be required to provide uniforms, school supplies and to cover healthcare costs. Education is the KEY to any chance of success for children in Uganda. I hope you can all see the light that radiates from this beautiful little girl. Let's make sure Shivahn's light never dulls or goes out.
