Medical care for ShinBi

In February 2014, ShinBi arrived in Los Angeles as Southland Collie Rescue's first dog from abroad. He had just been pulled from a South Korean animal shelter and he was skinny. He had been shaved because he had ticks. The dog we originally were bringing over was adopted by his foster family and that made ShinBi a very lucky dog because as we soon found out, he was not a good candidate for adoption, not by your average family in South Korea or the United States.
HOW SHINBI CAME TO THE U.S.
We used GoFundMe to get ShinBi here and the response from our donors was amazing. ShinBi was so skinny we weren't sure he survive the flight. His weight was our first priority when he arrived and you can see why in this video.
SHINBI ARRIVES AND THANKS HIS GOFUNDME DONORS
ShinBi has a long list of problems. He has heartworm, but would not have been cleared to come to United States ordinarily. Yet because he had just contracted it, his test came back a false negative. That's how luck ShinBi is.
Sue Baldwin, the long-time Orange County coordinator for Southland Collie Rescue, has taken ShinBi in. She's never cared for a dog so ill, one that began by needing potty breaks every hour because of his tremendous thirst. His thirst and frequent urination schedule was a sign of other health issues.
We found that ShinBi has diabetes and hepatitis. He has liver problems. We can't be sure of the cause and effect. Now we are focusing on his diabetes first with his heartworm problem being secondary.
In March, we calculated that the cost of his care from February until July would be $3,000, but we've already spent that amount of money on him (See our current medical costs), some of it coming straight from his foster mother's pocket. Sue Baldwin has been a complete angel.
Although he actually lost a few pounds at the one month mark in March, he is now gaining weight. He has gained 10 pounds since March. He currently weighs about 50 lbs.
The fur that was shaved off in South Korea is coming back as downy fluff. And he proudly wears pajamas and other clothing that people have sent to support him. His vet exclaimed to Sue, "He doesn't walk, he dances!"
Because he is heartworm positive and must lead a quiet life for now, that's exactly what everyone says when they meet him. He prances as if he was a show dog in a former life. In a few more months, we hope he can make more public appearances and win more people over with his quiet bouncy ways.
Southland Collie Rescue has never had to deal with health issues like these and we've all been learning a lot. Please help us support ShinBi. He was lucky enough to make it to the U.S. and find a rescue that was willing to take a chance on him. With more money, we think he'll be lucky enough to beat diabetes and heartworm.
