Help our Mom beat breast cancer

What a difference a day makes...

February 28th, 2014 started as an ordinary day. A few weeks prior, our mom had felt a lump during a routine self-breast exam. With no history of breast cancer in our family, we were told it was "probably nothing" and we were just waiting for that confirmation from her biopsy. The reassuring call we were waiting for turned into a message that changed our lives. The "probably nothing" was, in fact, a grade 3 tumor. The impossible just became our reality, our Mom has breast cancer.

Things started to change for us immediately. Since our Dad is plagued with his own set of medical issues, this has become even more of a nightmare.  Our Dad suffered a back injury last May and while home and attending physical therapy, he was further hit with an unexplained bout of cellulitus, also know as the flesh eating bacteria disease.  It is a rare but extrememly serious skin infection and he came within inches of losing his leg.  After an emergency surgery which included 26 leg incisions, he spent 12 days in the hospital and another 6 weeks mending at home.  His leg has healed but he is now in need of serious back surgery for 5 painful herniated disks, which are pressing on his nerves and causing additional and extreme pain down his leg.  Due to the pain our Dad is in, he has been forced to curtail his handyman business and is barely able to work at all while waiting for his back surgery.  Now he will be forced to postpone his operation while our Mom gets life saving treatment first.  Even before our Mom's diagnosis and the battle of our Dad's conditions, we were already struggling financially.  Our Mom had become the main bread winner juggling 2 jobs.  Amazingly  our Mom's main focus isn't even the fight against cancer coming her way, but how we can afford her treatments and continue to pay our bills and keep our home.

About Our Mom...

Sheila Peace is a million women rolled into one. She is a Mom, a wife, a friend, a caregiver and a hard worker.  After having me, her older daughter Tara, she said goodbye to her career in New York to be a stay-at-home Mom.  Four years later she had my younger sister Alana (now 16), continuing to stay home and be the most amazing and loving Mom you can imagine. She has been the perfect balance of mother and friend. She has gone above and beyond to give us the best life possible.  She has supported our dreams and guided us into the young women we are becoming. Our Mom is also the ultimate animal lover. We have 4 wonderful dogs and each one of them is also one of our Mom's babies. Several years ago she found her other great passion, dog grooming.  She grooms many dogs, some that have been turned away from other salons. With patience and love she gains their trust and gets them looking and feeling their best.  Many of her clients have become her personal friends.  Our Mom is a loving and dedicated person and is always there to help her friends get through the tough times in their lives. Now the tables have turned and she is facing her life's greatest battle.

Why we need your help...

Although our Mom has obtained health insurance, the deductibles and uncovered medical expenses are already mounting. On March 26, 2014 she had her first appoiment with a Dr. Debra Camal, a well known breast surgeon. She has been diagnosed with Triple Negative Carcinoma and will require a lumpectomy, followed by months of chemo and radiation treatments.   There will be some periods where she will not be able to work at all,  which depresses her a lot.  We will keep this page updated as surgery and treatment progress.

Thank you in advance for anything you can contribute that will help allow our Mom to focus on fighting this cancer rather than worrying how we will ever survive this financially.

With grateful hearts,

Tara, Alana, Twizzler, Romper, Pebbles & Muffin Peace
