A Loss of Sight, Never A Loss Of Vision!
Hi, my name is Shay and I'm 14 years old. I was born with Optic Nerve Hypoplasia and am legally blind. This year I will be participating in my first bicycle race (El Tour de Tucson) in order to raise money for a great cause. I will be raising money for a charity that is dear to my heart, Camp Abilities Tucson. I have attended camp for several years and know firsthand the impact that this organization has on the blind youth community in Tucson and surrounding areas.
I love cycling. My first experience on a tandem bike was at Camp Abilities Tucson. This is my favorite of the many activities at Camp Abilities. My vision is to encourage and enable visually impaired kids to become more active through cycling. My goal is to see more visually impaired kids on bikes enjoying the freedom I feel when I am tandem biking.
What is Camp Abilities Tucson?
Camp Abilities Tucson is a privately funded comprehensive developmental sports camp for children in middle and high school who are blind, deaf-blind or multiply disabled. The camp provides a one-on-one instructional situation for each child, as well as adapted sporting and recreational activities. Camp Abilities Tucson strives to empower children with sensory impairments and multiple disabilities to be physically active and successful members of their schools and communities. Because children with visual impairments have been shown to have lower levels of health-related physical fitness than their peers, Camp Abilities Tucson plays a vital role in reinforcing each child's self-esteem and confidence in their ability to master specific sports, recreational and social activities.

All money raised for Shay's Vision will go toward the purchase of multiple tandem bicycles to be used at Camp Abilities Tucson.
