Shannon's Cancer Fund

Don protégé
Shannon is one of those people that you can always speak to, and she listens. She is a sweet, quiet, peaceful soul that only shows love to others. She is always patient and rarely shows any emotions other than kindness. She has a love for animals, and the planet, and has tried to change the world in small ways by being eco-friendly, eating mostly vegetarian (at one point, was vegan), and spreading the joy of gardening and caring for plants.

Shannon works for the local hospital, where she pinches pennies to ensure your tax dollars are used wisely. She procures the most important products so that patient care is not affected by delays in the logistics process. Ultimately, Shannon is a part in saving lives in our community.

Recently, she was diagnosed with cancer. While we are cheering for Shannon, and we have confidence she’ll get through this, it’s not going to be easy for her. As her friends and co-workers, we’ve created this fundraiser to support her financially, as treatment and missing work is very costly. Times are tough, life is expensive, and cancer should not be the reason someone goes into debt. We need her to be at ease while she is going through this hard time, so that her body can heal.

Here is Shannon’s story:

“On Easter weekend I had an issue.  I called the GYN and they did an ultrasound that following Monday which showed a tumor; they did a biopsy right then. The biopsy came back "non-cancerous, but with level 4 pre-cancer cells."  I didn't know how to take that.

They referred me to an gynecological oncologist for a 2nd, cervical cone biopsy.  I could have gone to any doctor of my choice, but I work at Halifax so it made sense to wait it out to see our gynecological Oncology specialist, Dr. Molpus.

A few weeks ago I had my first consultation with the doctor.  He came with a shadow medical student and explained what to expect regarding biopsy.

The week after the consult (June 8th) I was in the OR for the procedure; during which it was determined that the tumor is stage 2, cervical cancer.  SHOCKED!!!

The doctor suggested two options.  A full hysterectomy and rad/chemo; or they could move my ovaries laparoscopically and treat  the whole area with rad/chemo. Went for plan B, which Molpus was leaning towards this anyway. I do not have children, and this finalizes any chance of that happening other than surrogate or adoption.

Don't mean to be the bearer of bad news but I thought I'd share.  I have been very fortunate to have never had any surgeries in my life until now.  I have had 2 procedures and 1 surgery in the last two months. The medical bills are no joke.  I have the best support from Bill, family co-workers & friends, but I need a little extra help.  Your donations are greatly appreciated. ”

We are hoping that you can find it in your heart to give, even if only a small amount. Every penny counts! Thank you so much.
