Shadow's colic surgery, please help
Nature Speaks, Inc. is raising money to pay medical bills for our 29 year old horse, Shadow. Shadow is a standardbred rescue and lives at the Nature Speaks, Inc. barn in Jupiter Farms.
In early November 2017, our special horse Shadow required colic surgery to save her life. She underwent surgery at Reid and Associates Equine Veterinarians in Loxahatchee, Florida. Her bills have exceeded $10,000 so far with more to come with her two-month recovery. She will be on stall rest for 60 days.
Shadow is one of four horses living at Nature Speaks, Inc. which offers educational and empowerment workshops. The horses work with children on the autism spectrum, disabled children and children with emotional and medical issues.
A program for teen girls is called "Who's in Your Herd?". The program teaches that taking care of horses can be a metaphor for making good decisions in their own lives.
"Nature Speaks offers life skills programs. We work with the kids before they get in trouble," explained Nature Speak's Executive Director Rachel Ibarra. "Our experiences demonstrate that the horses inspire the kids to make good decisions for their lives which move them forward in a positive direction. If you can make a 1,000 pound animal do what you want, you can do anything!"
