Meeting Sarah:
Being the Executive Director of Jennifer's Harbor, I have worked with many hurting people, but Sarah's story is one that I will never forget. I understand too well the lasting impact severe trauma can have on a fragile child. I met Sarah 5 months ago and feel blessed to be just a small part of her life. Sarah is working SO hard to accept the fact that her past is not what defines her. When meeting "the real Sarah" you instantly feel her joy and notice that her contagious smile lights up the room. She has been diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), Complex Traumatic Stress Disorder (CTSD), Other Specified Dissociative Disorder (OSDD), and Oppositional Defiance Disorder due to PTSD.

Michigan Here We Come!

Sarah will be meeting with Frances Waters, a world expert, who specializes in treatment of children with DID on November 13! Ms. Waters is an internationally recognized trainer and consultant in the field of childhood trauma, abuse, and dissociation. Waters will be doing a 4 day assessment and intervention to try and stabilize Sarah and prepare her for her ongoing therapy at Crossroads. Sarah's medical insurance does not cover any of this treatment.

The rest of the money raised will be used for ongoing counseling and to help with the financial stress that has been placed on the family due to Heidi having to take a leave of absence from work. Heidi is Sarah's only "safe person" right now. Heidi has been off of work for 12 weeks and FMLA will soon be expiring.
From a Momma's Heart:
We adopted Sarah when was 7 years old. The counseling agency used by the court system at that time said Sarah was the most troubled child in that county. She has what many people call Multiple Personality Disorder. Any time she has any level of negative emotion she ‘switches’ into another persona, generally recognized by ages from newborn to 7, or by specific behaviors. At 14, Sarah has spent thousands of hours in therapy over the last 7 years and she has made GREAT strides! A few months ago, Sarah had some repressed memories surface and this has caused an escalation and much more intense distress. One of these ‘other’ personas experienced some of the most traumatic events. This persona is desperate for help and will fight violently to call 911 and then tries to commit suicide. She has not been able to participate in any therapy, or even live day to day because she keeps switching to the "6-year-old" that experienced some of the greatest trauma.
Sarah has been in an acute stay behavioral health facility 4 times in the past three months, along with at least 30 emergency room visits. She has called 911 over 50 times and is in constant crisis. They are no longer allowing her into the behavioral health facility because they cannot help her and she needs residential care. Recently, even the police have said they will no longer respond to Sarah’s 911 calls unless she has a weapon. They have great compassion, but they also cannot do anything to help now. Let it be noted that the FWPD and the people in the Parkview Randalia Emergency Room have all been overly amazing and compassionate. Everyone has tried with all their might to help Sarah and do anything possible to assist us.
At the beginning of October, we were desperate and asked DCS to step in and help find residential placement for Sarah. I tried every facility in Indiana and was constantly told Sarah was too troubled, or that DCS is the only one who could place kids in the facility. This week I received a call from a facility nearby that has experience working with DID! Just two days before they said it was a 6-month wait list and now are saying that they can admit her ASAP! PRAISE GOD! Sarah could have been admitted this week, but DCS chose to not pursue the placement, assuming they do not want to incur the expense in their budget. Thankfully this facility allows parents to admit children in need. Now it will be 4 weeks to go through the process for us to admit her. That means around December 1st she will finally be in residential care. She will likely be at this facility for 9 months to a year. Sarah desperately wants help and is very happy to be going to the facility. Many times, she does not know what she has done until afterward when she hears me tell medical personnel or officers what has transpired. It breaks her heart to hear that she has hurt me or other family members. The ‘normal’ Sarah is so afraid of what she will do next.
During all of this, I began emailing the top experts in the country on DID to see if they could help find the right kind of care for Sarah. Thus, while Sarah waits these 4 weeks, Fran Waters in Marquette, Michigan has agreed to work with Sarah to help get her out of crisis mode and hopefully more ready for the therapy offered at the residential facility. Fran is a world-renown expert on Dissociative Disorders and PTSD’s in kids.
We truly believe that God has been protecting Sarah in so many ways even from within the womb. Her birth mother confessed to attempting to abort her with Heroine, OxyContin, Meth, Cocaine, and any other drug she could get her hands on throughout the entire pregnancy. Many of you joined us back then praying for Sarah to be protected in that womb. God answered mightily when she was born healthy amid being born addicted. We had her as our foster child until she was three when her birth father regained custody. That began 4 painful years of being neglected and abused by her birth parents. But God saved her again! He brought this lovely, precious girl back to us and we have the privilege of calling her our daughter.
It has been a long, hard seven years for our family, and even more so for Sarah. She has grown to absolutely love Jesus Christ as her LORD. She is normally full of joy and overflows with compassion for others. She has a special passion for those with autism and downs syndrome and plans to be a special needs teacher when she grows up.
This painful part of her journey has taken a toll on her and we are all looking forward to another level of healing for her soon. We KNOW that God has begun a good work in her. Therefore, we KNOW that He will not stop working his will and his ways in her life until it is complete!
