If you're receiving this email, it's because you have the pleasure of knowing Mike "Elmo" Elggren. Elmo is quite possibly the most storied and cultured person I’ve ever met, and this email is a request for support from his friends and community to pay tribute to him for being the very only one of his kind on the planet. Besides having lived life at a million miles per hour for the past 50 years, he’s helped thousands upon thousands of people with their warranty claims—I’ve met people all around the world that have an Elmo story. Outside of his legendary post at Black Diamond of 15 years, he’s officiated over a hundred weddings, created a beautiful family with his wife, survived being completely buried in an avalanche for 14 minutes on his Mother’s birthday, plus countless other colorful experiences that probably shouldn’t be recorded in an email. Even having known the guy for close to a decade, at least once a month he’ll rattle off some insane, barely believable story that he had almost forgot about.
He’s the very best kind of person and I feel privileged to know him.
Anyone that’s ever spent more than 2 minutes with the man has probably heard a story about touring with the Grateful Dead. To date he’s seen over a hundred shows, most of which while cruising around the US in a van in the 80s. The remaining members of the Grateful Dead are playing a 50th anniversary reunion show in Chicago this summer—the very last time all four remaining original members will play on stage together.
The plan is to send Elmo on an all-expenses paid 3 day “trip” to Chicago to catch the show, including airfare, ground transportation, a hotel room, and a ticket to the show. Here’s how the expenses break down:
Airfare: $375
Two nights in a hotel close to the show: $765 (updated)
Ground Transportation: $100
General admission ticket: $115 (including taxes and fees)
That’s a total of $915. It would be extra sweet to raise an additional $490 to be able to send his wife or a friend with him as well (total of $1405) , but $915 is the minimum. Everyone that contributes will have the opportunity to sign a card to accompany the gift of the trip. We’ll pick a day to surprise him and throw a quick party here in the warranty office after work (everyone is welcome!).
If you’ve ever had a laugh with him, been hooked up at a puppy sale, had the pleasure of hearing one of his stories, had him conduct your wedding, or just generally want to be a part of helping a great guy out, please consider contributing to the fund.
