No one has been a more dedicated evangelist for noir fiction over the years than Dennis McMillan. He's launched some careers, rescued others, and has sheparded the entire genre along when other publishers had given it up for dead. Dennis is arguably the original indie publisher, serving as historian, steward and champion of what he refers to as “rude literature” with a laugh. For those who appreciate debating or observing the debate over the definition of noir, here’s your answer: Dennis McMillan.
After all of Dennis's dedication over the years to noir and the authors who create it, a group of us have decided that it's time for noir to give something back back. When times were flush, you couldn't find a more generous friend than Dennis. (Seriously, do you know anyone else who's ever given away a Cadillac on the spur of the moment?) In 2018, however, the publishing game is leaner than it used to be and times are not as flush for Dennis as they once were. He's not a complainer but he's certainly feeling the pinch.
Going back to Prague has been a longtime ambition of Dennis's. (He was there briefly once back in the day on a trip that was unfortunately truncated. Don't ask.) The purpose of this campaign is to send him back there in style, but it’s a far more dense situation than a vaca for a literary icon. Sure, expatriating to Prague is a bucket list dream, but Prague also offers an affordable haven with contacts and opportunities for a Dennis McMillan.
We're a group of authors that has decided to raise enough money from the noir community and its dedicated supporters to give Dennis the opportunity to explore Prague in depth. This GoFundMe will give him a chance to make a permanent stand there.
All of us who live in the world of noir see Dennis as a Godfather, a mentor, a partner in crime. It would be gratifying beyond words to make this happen for him. (Okay, probably not "beyond words." We're writers, after all. But it'll definitely be a big deal.)
