On March 13th, 2015, Change for the King (a grassroots organization dedicated to youth and black male empwerment) and Howard University students are partnering with youth and civic organizations in the Greater Washington DC community to present, "Selma at HU: THE EXPERIENCE" This FREE movie screening and action-oriented panel discussion will take place at Howard University's School of Business Auditorium located at 2600 6th Street, NW; Washington, DC 20059.

After viewing the movie, many people (particularly youth) have walked away more cognizant of civil rights history, yet upset by re-occuring issues and paralyzed with little to no guidance on how to systematically keep the dream and purpose of on-going civic engagement alive.
The purpose of the event is to create an experience which includes engagement that transcends rhetoric. The attendees will be encouraged to view the movie through the eyes of current realities and issues that impact our community. Following the viewing, there will be a panel of youth, faith based, and community leaders who will highlight their experience in building and maintaining sustainable changes based on their best practices. The goal of the inter-generational dialogue is to futher facilitate reconciliation and engage participants, particularly youth, to take action NOW! Attendees will have the opportunity to align in partnership with such individuals and organizations.Thank you for taking the time to view this campaign!

MORE ABOUT CHANGE FOR THE KING:
Change for the King has provided programs to the Greater Washington community with an emphasis in facilitating sustainable changes, specifically for African-American males. The organization began on the campus of Howard University where students were discouraged from using the "N word" and if they did they were challenged to donate $.25 each time. The donated change help to make a contribution to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. The monetary change sparked a call for changes in the areas of education, economic empowerment and family & community engagement. The mission of Change for the King is to empower, expose and educate young males to succeed. We envision a community of men who are K.I.N.G.s (K - knowledgeable and accepting of sel; I - Intelligent and wise; N - Noble in character & G - Gifted for global impact). In addition to youth forums, workshops, and events, Change for the King sponsors two staple programs: YO, DADDY!? & Walk for the King. YO, DADDY!? is a festival and forum dedicated to young men who have absentee or unhealthy father-son relationships; Walk for the King is a prayer walk and rally to support organizations that address 4 issues as it pertains to African-American males including education, crime & justice, economic empowerment and family & community engagement. The organization began and has been operated solely by the visionary since 2011, the official launch and call for community engagement will be in March 2015 where the vision is to provide FREE monthly enrichment and edutaining activities for African-American males in the Washington, DC vicintiy.

Nick Gourdine - Founder & Visionary of Change for the King
Nicholas J. Gourdine is the Program Manager for the Concerned Black Men National CBM CARES® Mentioning Initiative in Washington, DC. The DC program continues the excellence of the original Capital CARES® program which began with 83 mentees in 2007. Gourdine directs programs and intervention-based initiatives at three local Washington, DC middle schools to improve academic performance, increase school attachment, school attendance, and self-worth. He administers specialized mentoring curricula and programs at Ideal Academy, Friendship Academy (Chamberlin Campus) and McKinley Middle School providing leadership and guidance to 135 boys in the Washington, DC area.
Gourdine excels at creating community outreach programs that engage youth and families in exploratory learning, self-awareness and personal leadership. He brings years of experience as a leader in a variety of community and youth oriented endeavors. He provides hands-on, energetic and didactic leadership and coaching opportunities for boys within the program.
Prior to his involvement with Concerned Black Men National, Gourdine was community director at Howard University where he established a freshman mentoring program and the Charles R. Drew Hall scholarship. He is also a community organizer in Washington, DC; founder and National Empowerment speaker at Change for the King, an organization dedicated to empowering and educating African American males and youth. Gourdine has acted as a program coordinator, facilitator, panelist and workshop presenter among a host of other leadership roles.
Gourdine has been an active mentor for over a decade with Big Brothers & Big Sisters of America, Concerned Black Men National and Mentoring to Manhood. He also volunteers for Court Service Offender Supervision Agency and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity where he was awarded Outstanding Brother and Fraternity Member of the Year.

A native of Jamaica Queens, New York, Gourdine earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and was accepted into the prestigious Howard University Masters of Divinity Program. He was inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Society, Who’s Who among American College and University Students and served as a Student Alumni Ambassador. He is also an emerging inspirational speaker, trainer and author.
