Scott Fights Back Fund

This is Scott Mellon-a brother, a son, an uncle, a friend, a respiratory therapist. Scott worked for more than 20 years in the Emergency Room of University of Mississippi Medical Center, helping save the lives of those in respiratory distress. Today, he needs our help as he fights for his own life against terminal cancer.

The need is immediate. Statistically speaking, Scott's already beaten the odds of surviving metatstic cancer with multiple reoccurances. Friends and family are launching this campaign in the hopes that money will quickly come in to provide relief for Scott and his family. Please keep reading to learn the rest of the story.

Scott was first diagnosed in the fall of 2007 with colon cancer. After extensive surgery and 13 months of chemo, he was cancer-free for four years when the disease returned with a vengence, this time in his liver. Gifted doctors at UMMC performed surgery to remove 8/10's of his liver, but the cancer lay on one of the main arteries to Scott's heart, causing the surgeon to comment that this was his most difficult surgery in 40 years of practice.

Scott went through more chemo but began to get weaker and weaker. In the beginning of 2015, he was so sick and unsteady on his feet that he was forced to quit work. Disability would not kick in until over a year after Scott left UMMC. In late 2015 it was confirmed that the cancer had spread to his pancreas, and was back in his liver and his colon. His official diagnosis is metastatic colon cancer and abdominal carcinomatosis (that last bit is a fancy word meaning that the cancer is in the linings of the organs in his abdominal cavity).

We are hosting this Go Fund Me campaign in hope of two things: 1) that we can help offset some of Scott's medical expenses and give him quality of life for what time he has left. His out-of-pocket medical expenses are currently $60,000 and rising. 2) Scott has a dream of taking one last trip together with his whole family, and money is needed to offset the expenses of travel. Some of you know that Scott's sister Alli and his three nieces and nephew live in Cambodia, where they fight full-time against the child sex trade. The dream is that Alli's family would be able to fly in and join Scott and the rest of his immediate family for a celebration of Scott's life, somewhere far away from chemo and needles and the day to day pain that comes with living through cancer's last stages. The family's prayer is that Scott's health would improve enough for this to happen.

Right now, Scott is on chemo again, and this time the doctor says he will be on it for the rest of his life. He is in intense pain around the clock from chronic pancreatitis that's developed on top of everything else, and sick from the chemotherapy. There is no stop date scheduled for the chemo this time. This disease is like a ticking time bomb: it is terminal, incurable, and claims that only 5% of people with Scott's initial diagnosis live five years with the disease. Scott's already beaten those odds.

Help Scott fight back!!! Please give today and spread the word. For a man who helped children and adults be able to BREATHE for so many years, let's be a breath of fresh air to Scott!
