Diversity in Science Olympiad

Donation protected
Give these students a voice at the international table!

Students of ethnic diversity took an exam to qualify to represent the USA at the International Earth Science Olympiad (I.E.S.O.).  They are ready, have studied and understand the Earth issues facing humanity: drought, affordable safe drinking water, ocean acidification, and topsoil loss, to name a few.  We need money to send four students of diversity:  African American, Native American, Asian American and women students, to the International Earth Science Olympiad that will be held this summer in Mie, Japan.  Over thirty countries will be in attendance.  Once in Japan, the students will be  assessed on their individual knowledge, and then placed on international teams to address real issues facing real communities in many countries.

Most students families are asked to pay for the team fees, and travel expenses.  Should the USA only be represented by students whose families can afford $4,000 to send their child?  The organizing committee of the I.E.S.O.  Team USA Inc. would very much like to have a team that represents the ethnic, gender and racial diversity that is the United States.  This should not be limited by the wealth of their parents.

This experience will change the lives of those students who attend.  They will come away from the trip with a new cohort of peers who are not only brilliant scientists, but who have worked together.  This experience will not only open doors to universities in the USA for the team, but will provide them access to international opportunities. These minority students have overcome many obstacles to become among the best prepared youth in the United States.

The money we raise will be used by IESO Team USA, Inc. to pay room and meals, team fees and travel costs for four minority students.  The students will join the IESO Team USA and attend a USA training program in Vermont to get them ready for the International work.  In Vermont the four most qualified students of underrepresented minorities including gender, will be selected to join the team to go to Japan.  Without your support, they can not afford to go.  We have no paid staff.  100% of the money raised will be used to get the students to the IESO.

Beth and Tom Tailer have been taking the USA team to the IESO for the last ten years.  We have seen what this opportunity has done for the students who have participated.  But more importantly, we know that the solutions to human/Earth problems can not be solved by one country, or ethnic group working alone.  We must come together and have all voices at the table to find solutions to the big challenges facing all humanity.  These include sea level rise, climate destabilization, drought, flooding etc.  The solutions that work for one community may not be the solutions that work everywhere, but we know that the next generation of young scientists must learn to work together.  Please help us.  We will all benefit.

In previous years students from Israel and Kuwait, Russia and the Ukraine, have worked together on global earth science issues.  Their parents may be trying to harm each other, but the children come together in understanding of our common planet’s issues.

The under represented minority group students you fund, will post their experiences on the IESO Team USA, Inc.'s Web page.  http://eatailer1.wix.com/team-usa-ieso

The following  quotes are from for underrepresented ethnic groups students  essays written when they applied for the program.

“The problems that plague humanity today, will continue to do so for centuries, unless we work together to find solutions.”

“I have been passionate about Earth Science since I was in 3rd grade when I started making my friends pick up trash.”

“I have been to the National Ocean Science Bowl, and am ready to represent our country.”

“My community faces a severe pollution problem with our water supply.  As a community we can make an effort to reduce pollution, but education must be part of the scenario.”

“Earth Science is important in that everything going on on the Earth, affects people in some way.”

“We cannot save ourselves or the Earth without a proper understanding of the Earth systems around us.”

To allow the students to attend the training program, and to travel with us to Japan, we need funding not later than June 15th 2016.
