Hello!
My name is Thira Rose Schlegel, and I am a Scholastic Art and Writing Awards national Gold Medalist from Austin, TX for my oil painting, Grandmother’s Hands.
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is a competition recognized by artists and writers across the nation. This year alone, nearly 350,000 works were submitted, 19,600 received regional Gold Keys, and out of those, 3,259 were rewarded with National Medals.
As a Gold Medal recipient, I have been invited to attend the National Ceremony which will take place at Carnegie Hall on June 7th. It would be an honor to attend the ceremony with so many other talented artists and writers, but I can only do it with your help.
All donations will go towards my travel expenses for this once in a lifetime opportunity; any amount is appreciated.

About Me:
My artistic interest started as early as I can remember. Throughout my childhood, I would carry a pencil and paper wherever I went. In elementary school, the teachers even made an exception for me to bring my sketchbook to the playground. Perfecting my craft remained a constant drive that bled from inside of me and out onto the paper. I am now a senior in high school taking AP Art, building my AP Portfolio, and participating in competitions like Scholastic.
About the Piece:
My piece "Grandmothers Hands" was inspired by a photo taken after my grandmother had been placed in hospice care, just days before she passed. To me, her hands seemed to tell a story of a life well lived through many years spent caring for her mother, her husband of 66 years, and their 10 children. My grandmother also loved her 35 grandchildren and 25+ great-grandchildren. She made many sacrifices throughout her life to make sure all of her children were well cared for, often placing their needs before her own. Those hands prepared many meals, bathed and dressed many little bodies, brushed many heads of hair, sewed many dresses, and mended many buttons. She even worked as a bookkeeper later in life.
My grandmother always had time to cut out an interesting article or write a loving note to someone she cared about. She had a deep faith and always tried to look at the bright side. Even though her hands suffered from arthritis she never complained about having any pain. My grandmother often enjoyed playing the piano and was even playing weeks before she suddenly becoming ill; three months after my grandpa died. My painting "Grandmothers Hands" will forever remind me of the love and support my grandmother gave to me. I know that it will continue to speak to me and inspire me to keep following my heart and pursuing my dreams.
