Sawyer Lane Jarrell, the infant son of Randy and Mary Jarrell was diagnosed at 3 months old with a rare, fatal, neuro-degenerative disease called Menkes Syndrome. Menkes is diagnosed in 1 out of every 100,000 to 350,000 live births and affects mostly boys. It is a fatal illness due to a mutation or complete deletion of the ATP7A gene that disables the body’s ability to transport copper to vital organs and tissues. It affects all 12 of the human body’s major systems. Symptoms include: seizures, mental deterioration, bone spurs, feeding difficulties, low muscle tone and many more. Sawyer is now 6 months old and continues to fight hard. His treatments consist of daily oral medications and painful injections to help offset the symptoms of this awful disease. Through all that he has endured in his short little life, Sawyer continues to smile not only with his lips but with his big, beautiful blue eyes. He is truly an angel here on earth and brings such joy and happiness to the hearts of all who hear his story.
