Help Save Small Business on Historic Magazine St

Donation protected
On March 20, 2020, the Novel Corona Virus created the necessity for mandatory government shut down of all of all non-essential businesses until further notice.  We are counting on the good judgment of the state and local authorities and know that they will let  give the green light when the time is right to reopen.  However  the  enforced closings have created many challenges the struggling proprietors on Magazine Street.  Sotre, located at 3933 Magazine Street, is one of many businesses on Magazine run by sole proprietors who offer a unique selection of products, many of which are hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind.  Sotre has an online presence but many shops are unable even to process online orders and with no way to generate income, cash reserves are quickly disappearing.  Most of these businesses have received, to date, no funding from SBA or the CARES act.  With bills coming due and with staff laid off, most of the stores are struggling to survive.

Magazine Street stores are  exploring every means of possible support, including federal and local grants and loans, but as of April 16, all the funding from the CARES act has been utilized, and even if the funds had been dispersed to our shops, they would not have meet the needs of our short-term future.  We know what a difficult and uncertain time this is for everyone, and we understand that there are many individuals and organizations in need, but we humbly ask your support.

Historically, Magazine Street  as a shopping mecca dates back to the mid-1800s when there were at least four markets operating on the street. Today the street, which runs six miles long,  is a mix of residential and commercial buildings, many which date from the later nineteenth century.  Most  commercial stretches consists of antique shops, clothing boutiques and home furnishings and gift stores.  Magazine Street is well known for being a popular shopping district for interested tourists.

We are not just asking for you to support commerce but rather HISTORY.  If our unique stores disappear, we will most likely be replaced with corporate chains and the character of our six mile stretch will change forever.  We know that finances are difficult for everyone these days but if you are in any way concerned with preserving the cultural and commercial history of New Orleans, we would be extremely grateful to receive that help, and any donation to this campaign.  All donations will be distributed equally to all who are legitimate businesses on Magazine Street and who qualify.  We will distribute funds the first of every month among those who have registered with us.
And if you could let others know about this campaign, we would be forever grateful!!!!

Here is how this fund will work:

This fund is for small, local retail stores with only one storefront location.  This fund does not include restaurants and bars as they are already being supported through other funds.  All interested stores will contact the Fund via this email address:  SBmagazinestreet@gmail.com.  The fund is open to all small shops on Magazine Street if they  sign up by May 1, 2020, the day of the first distribution.  The money will go to each person that applies to be shared equally among the fund members. We will include Sotre as one of the 25 as we are still awaiting our PPP and I would like to be in a position to hire back my employees when we reopen.  Draws will be dispersed at the 1st of every month.  Contributions are not tax deductible, but are greatly appreciate.

We would be so grateful your support! Every donation, no matter the amount, is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Grace Kaynor
