Juan Angel Bain Herrera was born on October 28, 2013 in Villeta, Colombia. As a premature baby at roughly 7 months weighing 3 pounds 17 ounce, he was incubated in the hospital until he was released on November 30, carrying an oxigen tank until January, 2014. Unfortunately, he did not receive the special care needed and the use of too much oxygen in his treatment caused the blood vessels of his retina to grow abnormally resulting in severe Bilateral Retinopathy of Prematurity in both eyes. At 6 months, the doctors in Colombia labeled Juan blind and no further tests were performed until August 2014 when he was also diagnosed with Cataracts, Leukocoria and Synechia. Juan will be turning one in a month and, according to the doctors, a surgery to better his condition can only take place prior to his first birthday. Juan will become blind in the next two months if he does not receive the surgery as he is in stage 5 of Retinopathy of Prematurity. In Colombia, the doctors are afraid to perform the necessary surgery due to the risks involved and the complexity of Juan’s operation. We have talked to many doctors looking for a solution, but we are running out of time. However, there is hope in the United States. The  Hospital in Michigan William Beaumont has done this surgery many times with a high success rate. http://beaunet.beaumont.edu/portal/pls/portal/prs.coe_pkg.results
A wonderful doctors in the United States are willing to perform the surgery on Juan’s eyes. Our only hope is to bring Juan to the United States, so that he can have the surgery performed by doctor Michael Trese in Michigan.  For this reason, we turn to you for help. Juan does not have any medical insurance and the fact that he has a preexisting illness means that no insurance carrier will cover him. Jessica, Juan's mother, is a single mom that is 20 years old and Juan’s father is only 18 years old and they are suffering because of their inability to help their son. Juan’s family lives in a rural town in Villeta, Colombia and they cannot afford the necessary surgery, transportation, flights, and all the other daily expenses for Juan and his mom to be in Michigan for a month (e.g. housing, food, and transportation to the hospital). The US Embassy in Colombia will not allow them to obtain a visa until they receive all the funds required for the surgery. We only have a month to collect the funds to get Juan to the US since the surgery can only be performed prior to Juan’s first birthday on October 28th. Please save this child’s eyes. Any penny counts and we also would really appreciate your prayers. If we don’t act fast he will be blind – but if we provide him with the surgery there is a good chance he will have vision and be able to lead an independent life.  " Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me" Matthew18:5-6
Thank You!

" Mateo 18:5-6
