A local youth charity is to lose its home!
Southwark Sea Cadets, a charity that aims to give young people aged 10 to 18, a great head-start in life through nautical adventure and fun are appealing for help from the public as we search for alternative premises close to our current base in Walworth, South East London.
In September the lease on our long time base – All Saints Hall in Surrey Square, is due to expire, and is unlikely to be renewed
Commanding Officer, Sub Lt (SCC) James Thompson RNR said: “Quite honestly, it is a devastating blow. We have worked with the Local Community in Walworth and Southwark; South East London for over 75 years."
"I can’t put into words how much our organisation means to the young people whom we serve. It is a safe place they can count on to be themselves, we don’t discriminate against any young person who wants to join our organisation. Our cadets go on to do remarkable things with their lives."
"We are calling on our local community for help. There must be a community building out there that we are able to use.”
Southwark Sea Cadets was founded back in 1942 and since then has worked with thousands of young people, who now run their own local and national businesses, travelled to the other side of the world where they teach water-sports and have even gone on to have great careers in both the Royal and Merchant Navies. All of our ex-cadets attribute their success in life to the head start that Southwark Sea Cadets gave them.
Fundraising Appeal
We are launching this crowd funding campaign to help to pay for:
New Premises: including any adaptions or modifications to the building that are required for access by those with disabilities,
Moving Costs: hiring of vehicles and people to assist with the move to new premises or storage,
Storage Costs: if we are unable to find a suitable property by September,
Hiring Temporary Premises: while we continue the hunt for a new home
If you know of a community building or commercial premises that is currently empty and in need of new tenants, then we urge you to contact us.
Whilst our target is high, we believe that it is achievable. We are grateful for every pound we raise, to coin a popular saying, every little helps!
