Shawnee needs radiation therapy for thyroid disease - we won't give up on her and we hope you can help save her life by donating to her treatment costs.
Nobody knows how tough it is to be a kitten on the street like Shawnee knows. She was "adopted" by a large male cat, Apache, who was like a father to her until his death a few years ago. He made sure she was rescued before he stepped into a trap himself. Neither was adopted into a "furrever home," and Shawnee remains here with us. She's chosen Harold as her new daddy and cuddles on his lap every evening. She is a precious silver tabby, and the quietest and gentlest friend you can imagine. We love her dearly.
A couple of years ago, Shawnee was diagnosed as hyperthyroid. She started medication to slow her thyroid production, gradually the dosage crept up and up, but to no avail. Her levels are still off the chart.
An aspirate of her thyroid was done, and no cancer cells were discovered. However, there's still the chance the thyroid is cancerous. You see, hyperthyroidism in cats is often caused by a tumor of the thyroid. It's usually benign, but it can be malignant. In either case, when Tapazole supplementation isn't effective, the cure is radiation therapy.
In Shawnee's case, since she's not stable on medication, she'll need a scan - a small bit of radioactive isotope is injected, and all thyroid tissue is illuminated. If it's in other parts of the body, the dosage of the radioactive isotope can be increased to kill all cancerous tissue. If no cancer, the dosage can be much lower.
Of course, the cost varies according to whether or not the more massive dose is done. Not only is the treatment more expensive, the stay in an isolation ward is longer.
We are in cat rescue, and we have a lot of cats. While the cost is high even for those not in rescue, it's out of our reach. We are reaching out to all of you for help to save Shawnee's life.
