Saber Rock was the best interpreter I've ever known. He has served alongside coalition forces for over a decade. My team was lucky to have gotten to work with Rock while we were in Helmand Province navigating 1,200 IEDs per square kilometer and facing almost daily ambushes.
Rock was unflinching. He kept his cool as he interpreted the enemy radio traffic that helped us avoid Taliban ambushes. He gave us life-saving information even in the middle of a firefight. If we went into a village he would know immediately if something was off about it. His charisma and love for the United States helped drive a wedge between the Taliban and the local Afghan villagers. He was so effective the Taliban put a price on his head.
Even though Rock had many opportunities to transfer to a safer area of Afghanistan, he would always tell us, "I'm never leaving Helmand until your team leaves." But Rock did leave us. On September 4th, 2008, Rock was medivaced out after a horrific IED explosion. It is a miracle he survived and the Irish Ranger Justin Cupples standing next to him did not.
Rock lost 5 fingers and underwent numerous surgeries. He still lives with chronic pain from the over 50 pieces of shrapnel in his body. You would never know that though. He still has the same wide smile and unending positive energy that he did when we served together back in Sangin.
The British forces he served with offered to bring him back to their country. Rock respectfully declined saying that, “America is the country my heart calls home.” Our team leader spent years trying to get him one of the coveted special immigration visas and in 2013 Rock finally made his way to America.
Rock drove for Uber but was eventually removed since riders felt uncomfortable with his missing fingers. Saber Rock’s injuries were too severe for many other employers to give him a job in the United States and the food truck he started was losing money. So a few weeks ago Saber returned to Afghanistan as a cultural advisor and interpreter. It was the only way he could make enough money so his wife and four children could afford to stay safely in America.
As soon as he is in the USA for five years he will have no problem getting a DOD job stateside using his expertise. That’s almost two years away though. I want to bring him home from Afghanistan early and I hope you can donate to this campaign to help me do so. All the money goes directly to Saber Rock and will allow him to afford his rent and basic necessities until he is eligible for a DOD job. With how much he has sacrificed for us I think donating a few dollars toward bringing him home is the least we can do as Americans.
