Save Our Iconic Bell Tower

For Whom the Bell Tolls?  Many people in Asheville, NC know this answer. The carillon Bell Tower at Groce United Methodist Church provides a ray of hope to people of all walks of life. It invites people to the Church Beyond Walls for such things as :

• hosting and feeding 125 needy people per week at the East Asheville Welcome Table
• hosting Room in the Inn for single and abused mothers
• providing food and financial assistance for the homeless and other needy people
• host scouts, bee keepers, Alcoholics Anonymous, Grief Groups, and Warriors
• providing community events such as the Pumpkin Patch, Tailgate Market, Fall and Spring Festivals

What is notable is that Groce United Methodist Church provides these events/support truly as A Church Beyond Walls. Anyone is welcome, regardless of race, creed, color, or social status. And people do come, as called by the church “with the Bell Tower”.

The Bell Tower is much like a lighthouse of old. It figuratively provides a guiding light and sounds to safety.

But this iconic Bell Tower is literally falling apart, to the extent pieces of it may soon be laying on the ground. Not to mention the potential for hitting someone. It was 20 years ago that the Bell Tower was revitalized, including adding the carillon. Take a look at this video.

You can see the deteriorated condition of the louvers and frame. Over 20 years of wear have caused this condition. And the louvers not only provide appearance, they are critical to the sound of the carillon and for ventilation of the tower. Unfortunately, the damage is present on all four sides of the Bell Tower.

The mortar and masonry require significant repairs. And the brick will need sealing to prevent migration of water through the masonry and further damage.

Many people pass through this door including church members, attendees, and the plethora of people that the church provides help to.

Groce United Methodist Church needs to raise $65,000 to adequately repair this Bell Tower.

As mentioned before, the repair work is extensive and includes replacing the louvers, frame, repairing mortar and masonry, and sealing the bricks. Additionally, because we must keep providing the services to the community during repair, it will require keeping the main entrance of the church open. This necessitates the use of an expensive crane and many skilled workers.

Please help us save the Groce United Methodist Church Bell Tower. The city and community are counting on you!
