For 60 years, J. Paul Jones Hospital in Camden, Alabama, has saved lives and provided quality healthcare to the poor and needy and others in and around Wilcox County. Now, because of inadequate medical reimbursements, our community hospital is in danger of closing. We need your help. When seconds matter, we do not need the nearest hospital to be an hour away.
Built in 1957 by a Congressional grant (Hill-Burton Act of 1946), J. Paul Jones Hospital was established to provide life-saving healthcare to the poor and others in our area. For 40 years, the government provided funding, but that abruptly ended in 1997. However, the amount of patients needing care and medical services has continued.
Today, our hospital is still saving lives and providing great care to more than 12,000 patients each year through our emergency room (20+ daily), in-patient beds, and lab facilities. However, 55-percent of our patients are either charity cases or on Medicaid, which reimburses only 10-percent of the cost. Our hospital has to “write off” $100,000 to $150,000 every month. Still, the poor are treated with the same compassion and level of care as those with insurance.
Wilcox County is the poorest county in the United States, with more than 33-percent of our residents living at or below the federal poverty level. We have the highest unemployment in Alabama (13.5% versus the national average of 4.3% and the Alabama average of 4.5%). We are approximately 71% African-American, 28% white, and 1% Hispanic/Latino (U.S. Census, 7/1/16).
We LOVE our hospital, our county, and our community. We LOVE our doctors, our nurses, our lab technicians and our other medical providers.

A. About J Paul Jones Hospital:
1) We are reimbursed only 10% for Medicaid patients.
2) Medicaid & no-pay (indigent/charity) care make up 55% of our hospital's patients.
3) Because of #2, we "write-off" $100,000 to $150,000 in care every month, due to patients' inability to pay.
4) We serve more than 12,000 people each year and average more than 20 emergency room visits every day.
5) We are a Hill-Burton hospital. In 1946, Congress passed a law that gave hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities grants and loans for construction and modernization. In return, they agreed to provide a reasonable volume of services to persons unable to pay and to make their services available to all persons residing in the facility’s area. The program stopped providing funds in 1997, but hospitals are still obligated to provide free or reduced-cost care. We are one of only 3 Hill-Burton hospitals remaining in Alabama. The other two are more than 2-hours away in Mobile & 4-hours away in Sheffield.
