Save My Parents' House
On Tuesday, August 29 my parents were forced from their home in Houston, TX by rising flood waters from Hurricane Harvey. They waded through 5 ft of water with our dog and cat to their truck, which had been parked on higher ground, and spent hours making their way through flooded Houston streets to family on the other side of Houston.
Days later, when they were able to return home, they found almost the entire downstairs destroyed. The flooring and sublfooring were ruined, the walls were soaked, furniture destroyed, my moms car completely flooded, the list of damages goes on.
Few people in Texas have flood insurance. This means for many like my parents they will get absolutely $0 support from insurance in paying for repairs. We are still waiting to see what, if any, we will get from FEMA.
The repair costs are estimated to total around $80,000-$85,000 and my parents will have to find ways to cover that on their own. Both of my parents have worked extremely hard their entire lives to earn and afford what they have. It hurts now to see much of that destroyed, and to know they face repaying the cost of this disaster for the rest of their lives.
