Save More "Spencers"

Last year we rescued Spencer, a 12-year-old Maltese. When we saw this poor little dog, we were appalled! He didn’t have much hair, his skin was red in many places, especially around his neck, he had diarrhea. His nails had curled around his paws which were raw, probably due to being in his own waste much of the time. What teeth he had left were in desperate need of dental work, and with no teeth on his left side, his tongue hangs out. Spencer’s ears were inflamed.
Since he was in such terrible shape, we doubt that he had ever visited a vet. In fact, we understand that he was kept in a crate most of his life. After being examined and given preliminary treatment, Spencer’s ears were treated and he was given rabies, his one- year distemper/parvo, and other vaccinations. Then he was neutered and had his teeth cleaned. Spencer came to us with 8 teeth; the average adult dog has 42 teeth. After his teeth cleaning, Spencer was left with only seven. And the two bottom teeth have grown to look like tusks!
In September, Spencer was examined again and was given boosters. After all this work, Spencer was ready for his forever home. Now, Spencer’s personality has come out and he’s quite a plucky little fellow. He’ll never be able to walk correctly, his joints have fused not allowing his legs to bend. This gives him a rather “jaunty” run that always makes us smile or laugh. He may misstep and fall but he gets right up and continues.
Spencer has now been adopted and we hope that Spencer’s neglect for 12 years has not shortened his life span. But whatever time he has, we know his new family plans on making the remainder of his life happy and secure.
We are telling you this to explain why we need donations. The veterinarian cost for Spencer’s rehabilitation was over $1,500! This cost has put a large dent in our very modest budget.
