Meet Melvin!
About 4 months ago, my boyfriend Colin and I decided that our dog Jaxon needed a friend. We went to our local shelter (where we also got Jaxon) to pick out a new pup - We went in thinking we wanted a dog slightly smaller than our 55 lb Jaxon. When we got there, one of the volunteers kept singing the praises of Melvin and told us his story. Melvin had been adopted from the shelter a little over two years ago as a puppy. After about a year, his first family decided that Melvin had grown too big, and brought him back. Melvin then spent the next year in the shelter, taken care of by the wonderful volunteers, but never the less spending the majority of his time in his cage. Over the months, people kept passing him by because of his size. And we were almost one of them! We took him out for a walk, and then looked at a few other dogs. Although Melvin was twice the size we were looking for, we then took him out to the play area to play with our current dog, Jaxon. Well, they fell in love and Jaxon had the final vote - he picked Melvin! Melvin is now part of the family, is nearly two years old, and we could not be happier.
When we brought him home, however, we realized that his back legs were weak - he put most of his weight on his front legs, and would even sometimes walk down the stairs on only his front two legs! He was clearly in pain, and we spent the next couple months managing his pain and trying to figure out what was wrong with him. Our vet took x-rays and suspected a spinal or neurological issue. She referred us to a specialist, who almost immediately knew the issue - Melvin has TWO torn ACLs in his back legs.
He will eventually suffer from arthritis, but we are now prepared to handle this down the line.
It was a relief to finally have an answer! But the cost is well beyond anything we planned to spend on our new dog only months after he came into our home. This is why we are asking for help. Each of his two hind legs needs surgery as soon as possible. Each leg costs around $4200, for a total of $8400. This is the best bet for Melvin to live out his long life pain free and be able to play like a normal, two year old dog.
