Casa Histórica Riochante is more than a house.

It is a living community cultural project in Monteverde, Costa Rica: a place for classes, gatherings, creativity, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, and community care.

For years, Riochante has been sustained through sacrifice, collective work, and love. What was once an abandoned and deteriorated site has been brought back to life by community members, who repaired walls, restored parts of the roof and floors, planted gardens, installed salvaged materials, opened the space for activities, and kept it active as one of the few truly accessible community spaces in Monteverde.

Today, Riochante continues to serve children, youth, families, artists, educators, and neighbors. In 2025 alone, the project hosted 936 community activities, involved around 200 volunteers, and represented an estimated 5,840 hours of resident volunteer management. It has become a vital space for workshops, gatherings, movement, creativity, cultural exchange, and community well-being.

This campaign supports the broader mission of Asociación Riochante Centro Cultural de Monteverde: to preserve, strengthen, and sustain community cultural space in Monteverde. The association is actively growing, welcoming new members, and preparing for its upcoming assembly as part of a long-term vision of community stewardship.

Riochante is now at a critical stage in its future. The path to ownership remains uncertain, and we still do not know what price the bank may set for the property. But this campaign is not only about a possible purchase. Riochante is larger than the purchase of one house.

This fundraiser supports the broader work of protecting and sustaining Riochante as a community-serving cultural project. Donations may help cover:
  - legal fees and professional support related to negotiations and property processes  - work to protect the land, easement, and conservation commitments connected to the site
 - professional and administrative support related to strengthening the association and advancing the path toward legal recognition as a public-benefit nonprofit (utilidad pública)
 - permits, insurance, Ministerio de Salud, Hacienda, and other regulatory requirements
 - structural assessment, stabilization, conservation, and carefully planned improvements needed to protect the architectural integrity of the historic house  - stewardship, programming, organizing, and the everyday work required to keep Riochante alive and serving the community
  At the same time, we are actively working to preserve the house and site as part of Costa Rica’s architectural heritage, and to support the ongoing effort to secure recognition as national architectural heritage (patrimonio arquitectónico nacional).

If ownership is secured, this campaign will remain essential as we work to stabilize, conserve, legally prepare, and responsibly adapt the site for long-term public use, while protecting the architectural integrity of the historic house.

If the bank ultimately chooses not to prioritize the existing community stewardship project and instead moves to auction the property to the highest bidder, contributions will still support the charitable mission of Asociación Riochante: protecting community cultural life, strengthening the association, and advancing cultural, educational, and public-serving infrastructure for Monteverde.

Es un proyecto cultural comunitario vivo en Monteverde, Costa Rica: un espacio para clases, encuentros, creatividad, voluntariado, cuido ambiental y vida comunitaria.

Durante años, Riochante se ha sostenido gracias al sacrificio, al trabajo colectivo y al cariño de la comunidad. Lo que antes era un sitio abandonado y deteriorado ha sido recuperado por personas voluntarias que repararon paredes, restauraron partes del techo y de los pisos, sembraron jardines, instalaron materiales rescatados, abrieron el espacio para actividades y lo mantuvieron activo como uno de los pocos espacios comunitarios realmente accesibles en Monteverde.

Hoy, Riochante sigue sirviendo a niñas, niños, jóvenes, familias, artistas, educadores y vecinos. Solo en 2025, el proyecto albergó 936 actividades comunitarias, involucró a alrededor de 200 personas voluntarias y representó unas 5.840 horas anuales de gestión voluntaria residente. Se ha convertido en un espacio vital para talleres, encuentros, movimiento, creatividad, intercambio cultural y bienestar comunitario.

Esta campaña apoya la misión más amplia de la Asociación Riochante Centro Cultural de Monteverde: preservar, fortalecer y sostener espacios culturales comunitarios en Monteverde. La asociación está creciendo activamente, incorporando nuevas personas miembros y preparándose para su próxima asamblea como parte de una visión de largo plazo de gestión comunitaria.

Riochante atraviesa ahora una etapa crítica en su futuro. El camino hacia la propiedad sigue siendo incierto, y todavía no sabemos cuál será el precio que el banco podría fijar para el inmueble. Pero esta campaña no se trata únicamente de una posible compra. Riochante es más grande que la compra de una sola casa.

Esta recaudación apoya el trabajo más amplio de proteger y sostener a Riochante como un proyecto cultural al servicio de la comunidad. Las donaciones pueden ayudar a cubrir:  - honorarios legales y apoyo profesional relacionados con negociaciones y procesos vinculados al inmueble
 - gestiones para proteger el terreno, la servidumbre y los compromisos de conservación asociados al sitio - apoyo profesional y administrativo para fortalecer la asociación y avanzar en el camino hacia el reconocimiento legal como organización sin fines de lucro de beneficio público (utilidad pública)  - permisos, seguros, trámites ante el Ministerio de Salud, Hacienda y otros requisitos regulatorios
 - evaluación estructural, estabilización, conservación y mejoras cuidadosamente planificadas para proteger la integridad arquitectónica de la casa histórica
 - gestión, programación, organización y el trabajo cotidiano necesario para mantener vivo a Riochante y al servicio de la comunidad

 Al mismo tiempo, estamos trabajando activamente para preservar la casa y el sitio como parte del patrimonio arquitectónico de Costa Rica, y para apoyar el proceso en curso orientado a lograr su reconocimiento como patrimonio arquitectónico nacional.

Si se logra asegurar la propiedad, esta campaña seguirá siendo esencial mientras trabajamos para estabilizar, conservar, preparar legalmente y adaptar responsablemente el sitio para su uso público a largo plazo, siempre protegiendo la integridad arquitectónica de la casa histórica.

Si el banco finalmente decide no priorizar el proyecto comunitario de gestión ya existente y en su lugar opta por subastar la propiedad al mejor postor, las contribuciones seguirán apoyando la misión benéfica de la Asociación Riochante: proteger la vida cultural comunitaria, fortalecer la asociación y promover infraestructura cultural, educativa y de servicio público para Monteverde.

Riochante existe hoy porque hubo personas que decidieron no dejar desaparecer este espacio. Su apoyo nos ayuda a continuar ese trabajo con transparencia, compromiso y visión de largo plazo.
