Going to Nicaragua
Donation protected
Hey everyone, I'm going to Nicaragua!
I'm asking for support in the opportunity as a member of an interprofessional team traveling to Nicaragua to provide community based rehabilitation within hogars (i.e. elder centers) to improve the quality of life of older adults in Nicaragua!
Nicarauga Initiative at Pacific University:
Pacific University’s College of Health Professions (CHP) offers an interdisciplinary travel opportunity to Nicaragua for approximately 20 students and faculty to provide health-related services for Nicaraguan elders in partnership with the Jessie F. Richardson Foundation (JFR). The JFR Foundation is a local, non-political, non-religious charity organization with a focus on improving the quality of life of older adults both domestically and abroad. Participating Pacific University programs in the College of Health Professions include; Dental Health, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant and Physical Therapy. I have been luckily enough to be selected to travel abroad as one of the two OT students in this interprofessional team!
Background about Nicaragua:
Nicaragua is ranked as one of the poorest nations in the western hemisphere. Limited pension programs and government healthcare programs exist for elders in Nicaragua. Many elders who can no longer work and have no family to care for them live in hogars. Each hogar houses 35-45 elders and relies on foreign aid and municipal assistance for funding. Some centers are operated or supported by local religious orders.
Why:
Traveling to Nicaragua will not only provide sustainable services that benefit Nicaraguan elders and the local community, but it will provide the opportunity to deepen my clinical skills as an occupational therapist, understanding of what each profession offers, as well as promote collaboration to enhance interdisciplinary practice and educational experience.
By supporting me to go to Nicaragua, you will be assisting in funding my traveling expenses (i.e. flight, immunization shots, educational costs) as well as the supplies purchased to facilitate sustainable programs and supports for Nicaraguan elders.
Please help me in raising money for this amazing opportunity!
Information about My Trip:
Travel dates: December 13 - 22, 2015
Locations: Esteli and/or Jinotega
Programs participating: Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant Studies, Audiology, Masters of Healthcare Administration
More detailed information will be provided as the trip develops.
Thank you for all your support!
Sarah
