ALS Care Fund

My name is Sandy Watson, my husband, James Watson, now aged 58, was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, in June of 2014.  As a self-employed contractor for over 40 years he has suddenly found himself unable to work due to this debilitating disease. He is a loving father to three sons, two of which are in their 30's, and another, age 14, still at home.

For most of our life together he has worked harder to provide for his family than anyone I've ever known.  Now he is barely able to get off of the couch without assistance.  His body is giving up on him.  This disease does not effect the mind, so sadly he is fully aware of the quick degradation of his body and life.  For a man who used his body as an instrument for so many years it is very hard for him to be idle and to not have the ability to perform the small daily tasks that you and I take for granted.

He has always been a very giving man, taking time from his work to care for his mother for 2 years following a stroke and dementia.  As well as helping to care for my mother while she battled ovarian cancer.  We also opened our home to foster care for many years trying to help children in need.

His care now is a 24/7 job for me.  Needing to help him with even the most menial of tasks.  The cost of his care, along with the loss of his income, and my inability to work while caring for him is straining.  The financial stress is overwhelming.  It is with great humility that I ask for your help.

Prior to my husband's need for extensive care I opened a small consignment shop to attempt to offset my husband's inability to work.  At this time it is closed, as I am with my husband caring for him.  At this point his prognosis is very grim, everyday is a struggle and his time here is fleeting.  I plan to reopen my shop as soon as I can, but we are struggling in the meantime.  My goal is to remain self sustainable, but I need help to get back on my feet from this situation put upon us by this horrible disease.  ALS takes its toll on the person afflicted with the disease and also takes a toll on their loved ones that are loving and caring for them that will be left behind.  Even today, he is always apologizing for leaving us so early, which he has no control over.  My heart breaks daily.

We truly appreciate any help that you can offer to assist us in our time of need.  Thank you and bless you.
