Sampson's Summer of Shakespeare

Dear Arts Supporter,

I am joyful to share with you today some incredible and amazing news.

First, a little about myself, my name is Monica Sampson, I am currently a Senior at ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism pursuing a double major in Broadcast Journalism and Theater. Throughout my time at ASU I have maintained a Magna Cum Laude GPA and been on the Dean's List every semester of my undergraduate career. I have achieved this while simultaneously interning at the local NPR affiliate, KJZZ where I covered local stories; additionally I worked for Arizona PBS as an Education Reporter, while rounding out my educational experience as a Broadcaster and Media Personality for the local radio station, KASC Blaze Radio, where I have hosted and DJ’ed my own radio show for four years. As an artist I was fortunate to be awarded the, “Joan Frazier Memorial for Judaism and the Arts,” in partnership with the Hillel Jewish Student Center, where I filmed, shot, edited, and made an original documentary. As an Actress, I have acted for local theaters like Phoenix Theater, Binary Theater Company, and M.C.ed for national company events for Intel and Grubhub, not to mention the annual ASU Pitchfork Award Show.

“Wow, this is great,” you think to yourself, “It sounds like this girl loves life, and is a passionate, and dedicated performer, actor, and journalist.” But I’ll bet you’re wondering why I’m writing you today….

It is an honor for me to say, that after months of auditions, applications, and hard work I have been admitted through the Performing Arts Abroad program, to study theater at The Summer Acting Intensive at Shakespeare’s Globe in London.

Performing Arts Abroad is working in collaboration with Shakespeare’s Globe to offer a unique summer acting intensive exploring the performance of Shakespeare’s work through classes in movement, voice and speech, text interpretation, stage combat, and more. Classes will take place on the Globe premises, where you will train with London theatre professionals and get a behind-the-scenes look at the Globe’s summer productions.

This amazing foreign art and culture opportunity will change the trajectory of my life; living in London, traveling through England, taking classes and performing on the West End and ultimately visiting Shakespeare's home in Stratford upon Avon.

Now the real question at hand is, “To be or not to be,” as it is with great sadness I say, that although chosen globally from only twenty available student positions, I am unable to afford the tuition, living expenses, and flight to fulfil my destiny and make this dream a reality. I know this opportunity is in line with my greatest potential as a performer, yet the one thing holding me back is the ability to pay for such a life changing, learning experience.

This is where you can help, as an investor, and contributor for the future of a young talented Arizona Artist.

This is not only an honor for myself as an actor, but the entire Arizona Arts Community; as I will serve as a representative for arts in the Southwest. I am working with Arizona State University, Arizona Commision on the Arts, Gammage, as well at local theaters in the Valley to make sure my knowledge obtained from this valuable experience will translate into a learning experience for all of Arizona's Arts Community. Therefore, upon my return to Arizona, I plan to give workshops, classes and other teaching opportunities to my fellow student actors.

I stress this point, because I want you to understand the great value this experience will add to my life, education, and artistry, but that additionally I have decided my experiences should and must, be a learning tool for other actors, and artists.

Therefore, this is an opportunity for you to invest in young local talent, to support someone you know personally, with a hungry learning spirit, who will not only experience a new professional acting standard and culture, but will promise to give back to others in our community.

Please help shape my future as an artist through your support. Any financial assistance, no matter how small, will gift my dream of studying at the Globe Theater in London just that much closer and more attainable.

I look forward to reviewing my life and seeing that this opportunity was the one that opened many doors for my creative, artistic and storytelling path to unfold. Thank you for making this possible with your supportive donations.

Thank you, or as I hope to be saying soon from London….

“Cheers!”

Monica Sampson
