Samaritan Children Care Centre- Giving Hope

Who They Are:
A non-profit organization that was created with one ambition and vision: To unite people who wish to contribute to the elimination of human suffering, illness, illiteracy, and poverty in destitute children.

Our Story:
After spending this past summer volunteering at the Samaritan Orphanage in Gilgil, Kenya, Abbie and I have made it our mission to find ways to continue to give back to this amazingly caring and beautiful community of children. This orphanage is filled with anywhere between 60 and 80 children everyday, some of whom live at the orphanage and others who come for the day to attend school at the orphanage and receive three meals a day. These children have next to nothing, yet they greeted us with smiles and cheers everyday and showed an incredible desire to learn in the classroom on a daily basis. They have inspired us, and we hope our stories, pictures, and continued communication with the orphanage will inspire you too.

Led by Pauline Kyriaki, the director of the orphanage, and the head teacher, Job, the children are surviving entirely on donations and often Pauline doesn't know whether she will have enough food for all of the kids to eat every day. She spends her day running around Gilgil looking for supporters to help the kids survive. We know many people here in the States don't often consider how difficult it is to go into everyday not knowing whether you will have enough food to eat, let alone having to worry about whether 60-80 young children will have the nutrients they need to survive. The orphans also attend school at the facility and are taught by volunteers like me and Abbie as well as other Kenyan volunteers. They are in desperate need of school supplies to help the kids learn. We can make a difference for this group by raising money that we will send directly to Pauline so she has a steady fund of money to use for food, school supplies, clothing, teacher salaries, and basic sanitation for the children.

A National Concern:
Food costs in Kenya have been steadily increasing over the past several years due to the drought the country is experiencing. Prices of commodities such as milk, wheat flour and sugar continue to rise. Half of the Kenyan population lives on less than $2 per day. "The price of a 90 kilogram bag of maize, which is the main food source for most Kenyans, jumped from about $16 in June 2010 to about $44 in July 2011 -- an increase of 160%."* The more expensive the food cost is directly affects the children at the orphanage by getting less to eat each day.

How You Can Contribute:
- Become a volunteer.
- Donate money on this website for clothing, shoes, stationary, food, linens, medicine, and toys.
- "Adopt" a child by making regular monthly contributions and having regular communication with your child. This can be set up by emailing Pauline directly.
- Sponsor a volunteer.
- Spread word about the cause.
- Host fundraising events and off the contributions to this fundraising campaign.

Need an example of the impact your contribution could make?
$1= 1 liter of milk or 1.5 liter bottle of fresh water

$2= a 1kg bag of rice (a treat for the kids!)

$10= a 10kg bag of potatoes

$25= 12kgs of fresh fruit

$50= about 100kgs of maize flour used to make ugali, a staple food for the children. This would last the orphanage several months.

Contact Information:
If you would like to contact Pauline directly to set up a monthly sponsorship of a child or to confirm what your money is being spent on, she can be reached at [email redacted]. She has two bank accounts that accept direct deposits as well, which is how we will be sending this money to the orphanage.

You can contact me at [email redacted] or [email redacted]. Abbie can be reached at [email redacted].

Please offer whatever you can to help. We will be setting up a website soon hopefully with options to sponsor specific children and continue to donate to the orphanage on a monthly basis. Thank you very much!
