Almost 2 years ago I began boarding difficult dogs for rescues who needed help getting them fit for adoption. Some were local and some came from the Carribean where their lives on the streets had been filled with cruelty and hardship.
Many of these dogs stayed for up to 6 months waiting for a foster who could/would manage their issues. Many went on to foster or forever homes.
There were some, however, who were thriving here on the farm where their specific needs could be met and the triggers that found them unfit for mainstream social culture could be avoided.
This group who were operating as functional members of the pack and household here, each animated, affectionate, mischievous and endearing, faced euthanasia as the last resort.
I adopted 3, however with 6 permanent residents it became clear that no more could remain without a stipend for their lifelong care. As time went on more animals in this same situation came and stayed for a one-time fee.
Although boarding continues to support all ten dogs and me, the infrastructure needed to continue providing a secure environment comes at a cost that is difficult to meet.
I would like to fence a five acre portion of the farm for safe pack nature walks, training and segregated play yards to separate my Safe Haven pack (of sometimes difficult dogs) from paying boarders for added safety.
The approximate cost of supplies for this is $6,000-$7,000 if we do the labour ourselves.
Please help me create this safe place for the dogs here who will spend their lives on this farm, and assist me in offering the same opportunity to more dogs without other options for a chance at a great life.
