Sadie the Service Dog - Cancer Care

Sadie Mae Hawkins is a charming and beautiful,120 pound Cane Carso Service Dog.  Besides helping her “mom” and keeping her in good humor, Sadie is a well-known do-gooder in the community.  The pair promote non-profit organizations for dogs and cats, animal
related legislation sessions, local businesses and events, and service related organizations.  Most of all, Sadie and her mom help the community understand the role of a Service Dog and what they can do for their handler. Sadie is impeccably trained and  has earned all three AKC Good Citizen awards.  She also had been selected to test for Therapy Dog before she became ill.    And, Sadie Mae even has her very own hilarious Facebook where she reports on her activities and the exasperation of living with her mom, who likes to dress her in hats and silly costumes.

And now…..Sadie has cancer. Her mom took her to Steamboat Veterinary Hospital on August 22 to have 7 fast growing skin lumps removed. Surgery went well but later the sites began bleeding heavily and they could not get them to stop. Her surgeon, Doctor Smith drove Sadie to the Olympia Veterinary Specialists Emergency folks. They worked hard to get the bleeding under control, gave her medications and a blood transfusion. Meanwhile the biopsies came back and 6 of the masses were cancer.   This news crushed her mom who loves Sadie Mae beyond words.

Sadie has Hemangiosarcoma. This is very dark news, but the bright spot is it has not affected her organs so far. The cancer is why the wounds bled as well as why Sadie had been so tired lately. So on August 25, her mom met with the wonderful Doctor Parshley, at the Olympia Veterinary Cancer Center.  A treatment plan was started with lots of medications and chemotherapy.   All the pills and capsules are concealed with spray cheese so Sadie thinks they are treats!

Sadie is going to continue to document her cancer journey on her Facebook page with her typical snarky and silly sense of humor. Needless to say, her mom is extremely worried about her perfect little angel, how to manage without a Service Dog, and paying all the mounting the vet bills.

It took several friends to talk Sadie's stubborn (and proud) mom into allowing us to set up this GoFundMe.  Sadie's mom is a 74 y.o. disabled woman on a very fixed income and she did not want to ask for help, but the bills are already at $6,500 and with each treatment it will just make that total go higher.  Whatever you can contribute will mean so much to this dynamic duo.  Thank you so much for your support...

Please visit Sadie Mae Hawkins on Facebook for updates on her condition and whatever silliness she is up to.
