WHAT IS AFRIKA ARTS KOLLECTIVE?
Established in 2013, Afrika Arts Kollective is an East African art collaborative that focuses on organizing innovative projects to address social and economic issues affecting Kyebando, a poverty-stricken pre-urban slum on the outskirts of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. Within Kyebando, over half of the population live in extreme poverty and unemployment is a staggering 80%.
WHAT DOES AFRIKA ART KOLLECTIVE DO?
Afrika Arts Kollective provides a creative workspace connecting local artists and their knowledge, skills, and passion with the broader community.
One of the Kollective’s pilot programs, Ekilawuli (The Glass Works Project) provides training in both hot and cold glass techniques using the glass waste found in abundance in Kyebando and throught the capital city kampala. This program has provided for dozens of otherwise unemployed women to learn new skills, express their artistic selves, and together build an entrepreneurial club, selling their creation in monthly markets and directly to shops and restaurants throughout the city.
In another flagship program, the Mural Art Project , the Kollective coordinates large scale mural projects, acting as liaison between local artists and public space stakeholders, such as property owners and government agencies. A main priority of this project is to invite established, well-known artists from outside the community to mentor and collaborate with the emerging artists of this pre-urban slum. The Kollective guides the muralists as they create socially conscious pieces, provoking thought and dialogue around Kyebando’s most pressing issues while beautifying public spaces.
WHY IT MATTERS
Afrika Arts Kollective provides a space for creative self-expression where it is sorely needed. Its programs provide financial independence for its participants as well as inspiration and pride in the neighborhood for the community at large.
THEY NEED HELP RIGHT NOW
This organization has had to close its doors during the COVID-19 pandemic, drying up its income. We received some support from Stichting DOEN that will allow us to continue for a short period of time but we need much more to start organizing the workshops and expanding our reach within our community.
The Kollective’s fundraising goal is set at $12,000. This amount will satisfy their immediate needs such as rent, salaries, materials and other operating costs so they can re-open their doors and resume normal operations as soon as the lockdown ends. Achieving this fundraising goal will also allow for the expansion of the community studio, acquiring studio tools and to continue empowering pre-urban slum community artists with skills and self-sustainability with education and mentorship. Please support us so that we can continue supporting those in our community of Kyebando.
Your donation will help ensure this critical resource outlasts this crisis and continues its mission of empowerment, self-expression and financial independence in this neighborhood that has so much to offer but traditionally so few ways to offer it.
