SUDS at Guantánamo Bay 2018

Donation protected
Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba (SUDS ) is a non-profit organization designed to help improve the lives of injured veterans by training them in a challenging and rewarding activity that helps facilitate the rehabilitation process as well as introduce them to a sport that, for many, is enjoyed for years to come. The SUDS program is for service members who are wounded, ill, or injured with a permanent physical disability requiring adaptation. SUDS pays for all of the veterans’ expenses—from airfare to meals and lodging. There is no cost to the participant.

This year, SUDS is bringing its members to the Naval Station in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba and is collecting donations to facilitate the travel, lodging, and other costs of hosting our disabled veteran service members for an un-paralleled diving experience off the un-touched shores of Cuba.

Background on SUDS:
SUDS is a subordinate chapter of Disabled Sports USA, which is a grassroots nonprofit organization based at Walter Reed in Bethesda, MD, has only one paid employee and relies solely on donations from the general public. Local restaurants, residents and dive operators offer assistance during trips.

SUDS offers scuba certification programs through SDI. The majority of the service members we train have received severe injuries.

Service members who are not able to perform a skill to SDI open water standards are offered the chance to earn their scuba certification with a Scubility™ certified scuba instructor.

SUDS also teaches the adaptive scuba program on Thursday afternoons starting at 1500 in the aquatic therapy pool at Walter Reed in Bethesda, MD.

Our program uses SDI's online training system at www.sdi-onlinetraining.com to allow divers to learn at their own pace.

Our dive instructors are American Red Cross volunteers & most are former or active duty military.
