Bring Clean Water to Everyone

Donation protected
Exhausted and wearied by the scorching weather, I took out the 500mL bottle of clean water out of my backpack. In seconds, I was surrounded by hundreds of children who were also parched by the sun. Before coming to Uganda, I was somewhat aware of the poverty and water-related problems that the children of Uganda were currently dealing with. However, a bottle of water had opened my eyes to a world that I had never imagined. These children suffer tremendously from various diarrheal diseases, such as from cholera and typhoid, mainly because they don’t have access to clean water. It was appalling to witness children drinking dirty water. But what choice do they have? No one can survive without water. Later that day, a few local Ugandans made preposterous statements that dirty water cannot be that detrimental and critical of a problem. Some were so inured to drinking dirty water that they did not care so much about its harm. These scenes were simply shocking.

This summer, I had the opportunity to work with SPOUTS of Water (SPOUTS) and volunteer in Nyero Primary School, Uganda. SPOUTS is a social venture that seeks to increase access to clean and affordable water. By creating a filter that takes away up to 99.99% of the harmful bacteria, the founders John Kye and Kathy Ku have discovered a way to provide clean water to those in need. However, after having talked to the president of Nyero Primary School and John, I’ve learned that more than half of the school could not afford those filters and that SPOUTS is initiating the Support Schools with Filters (SSF) project, which I have volunteered to become a part of. To help SPOUTS implement the SSF project and reduce the plethora of issues caused by the lack of water, I have decided to start a fundraiser. If I succeed in raising my goal amount of $2900, I could help SPOUTS provide and install enough filters that would give over 1000 Ugandan students full access to clean water at their school. Should the campaign raise more than $2900, I will give the remaining money to SPOUTS to serve more schools and Ugandan children.

Here are details of the project-

Introduction: As a part of the efforts to fulfill its long-term vision of brining clean water to all in Uganda in a sustainable manner, SPOUTS is initiating the Support Schools with Filters (SSF) project. In collaboration with IDI Uganda, our goal is to provide clean drinking water access to school children, starting with Nyero Primary School. SPOUTS SSF project entails close collaboration among SPOUTS, IDI, and Nyero Primary School in that SPOUTS provides and installs filters in a way that can generate sufficient clean water for all students at the school, and IDI and Nyero Primary School coordinate with SPOUTS to develop and manage a filter maintenance system. With SSF project, SPOUTS aims to eventually distribute the filters to each of the students’ families by educating the importance of clean water to and promoting SPOUTS filters among the students’ families at the family assembly.

Objectives:

For SPOUTS-

• Provide and install filters in a way that can generate sufficient clean water for all students at Nyero Primary School.

• Prepare education program on importance of clean water that will be delivered to the students’ families at the assembly.

• Promote its filters and provide them at an affordable price to the families.

For IDI and Nyero Primary-

• Develop and manage a filter maintenance system in order to keep the filters at the school sustainably.

• Coordinate the family assembly where SPOUTS can run its education program and promote its filters.

• Work with families interested in buying SPOUTS filters.

According to http://water.org/country/uganda/, nine million people lack access to safe water, and preventable water-borne disease is the leading cause of death for infants. Simply neglecting these critical problems will not help bring an end to this horrifying situation. After working with SPOUTS and volunteering in Nyero Primary School, I have come to realize that these children don’t have access to clean water, a critical necessity in all men.

As citizens of the same world, we each have a responsibility to do what we can to help these children in need of clean water. Your donation can change each one of these children’s lives and open a new world for them. Donations of any amount will be appreciated and any source of communication can help, so please share this! Thank you for the support.
