Baking Bread, Building Lives

Thank you to those who have so generously contributed to our community garden efforts. We are now transitioning into our next phase of community action with the Spoonful of Honey Food and Job Security Initiative, Inc., a federally recognized 501(c)3 corporation. The mission of this program is to provide healthy eating and job sustainability education to at-risk women in SW Atlanta. We will begin with gardening and culinary training, later expanding to teach electrical and carpentry skills free of charge to our program participants. These skills aren't difficult to learn. Unfortunately, the barriers to obtaining these skills (tuition, accessibility, etc.) are overwhelming for many people. We hope to remove these barriers, and help provide women in need with a fresh start.

Over the next few months, we will begin our 10-month healthy eating program and culinary training program. We've partnered with HABESHA, Inc. - a local community action hub and garden -  to train our participants in the basics of gardening. Our participants will also volunteer in the Adair Park Community garden, growing their own food.

We're also partnering with the Irwin Street Market for culinary training and product development space. The owner of Irwin Street Market, Jake Rothschild understands our goals, and has been generous enough to provide the facilities needed to educate our participants. We will begin with food safety and ServSafe certification, moving into the science of baking. Trained pastry chefs will guide our participants through ten months of hands-on training, learning everything from bread baking to cake decorating. Our program will not only teach women to bake, but also provide an opportunity for them to sell and distribute what they produce.

Friends and volunteers have committed to assisting with transporting our participants from SW Atlanta to Midtown for training. However, there's so much we need help with to make this successful. Any amount you're willing to contribute is greatly appreciated. All donations are tax-deductible.

Thanks, again! God bless!
