SLGS-STEM-Power-Drive-John-O-Groats-Lands-End-2021

Do you want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money in aid of Sierra Leone Grammar School Old Boys Association Foundation Trust and every donation will help. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.

I am a keen motorist and I am an Observer with Basingstoke Advanced Motorists.  Last year I did a long-distance drive for charity.  I am now about to embark on a repeat endeavour.  So do I invite you to be part of this Mark 2 that aims to be faster, easier, better reported and raises more money.

I grew up in Sierra Leone and have good memories from 1967 to 1974 of attending the Sierra Leone Grammar School, the oldest secondary school in West Africa.  I studied science at “A” Level and that gave me a good foundation for my career at engineering companies in Britain.  Several alumni who graduated from the school up to the 1990s have had distinguished careers in various disciplines.

However, today’s students at the school lack these advantages.  The country’s economic difficulties mean that the school needs significant investment in science in order to attain previous standards.  Today’s students are just as bright as my generation, they just need a similar opportunity to build their own futures after their promising starts.  See the website www.stemforslgs175.com , especially “The Cause” tab.

The UK Alumni Association, Registered Charity 1146279, has arranged for five runners to represent the school at the Virtual London Marathon this autumn to help raise funds for the School.  My competitive running days are long past, but I want to supplement their physical effort by doing a repeat long car drive.  My target is at least £3,000.  Can we not just meet it, but smash it?

This will be an end-to-end tour of Britain, from John O’Groats to Land’s End on the 17th and 18th August 2021, about 850 miles.  This will feature:

Recording the entire trip using a Dashboard Camera that monitors both speed and geographical location,

Presenting the highlights at an interactive question and answer Zoom meeting on 27th August at 21:30 BST.  Meeting ID "850 6641 8810" Passcode: 083824.

•    Aiming for a calendar time of 30 hours, from 08:00 hrs on Tue 17th to 14:00 hrs on Wed 18th.  I hope to get under 18 hours driving time.

•    My intended route south from John O’Groats is:

The A99 road to Wick (30 min)
The A9 road all the way to Edinburgh (6 hrs)
The A7 cross-country road to Carlisle (9 hrs)
The M6 motorway to just south of Birmingham (overnight stop at Bromsgrove) (13 hrs)
The M5 motorway to Exeter (16 hrs)
The A30 road to Land’s End (18 hrs)

During the non-motorway stretches I hope to stop to make Facebook videos from outside the car.

As usual, I will be covering all the costs of the trip (fuel, accommodation etc), so any donation you make will go entirely to the charity.

Last year, several people were disappointed to miss supporting me before funding closed.  Now here is a second chance, at the website https://gofund.me/78c38100 .  If you do donate, please tick the box for Gift Aid!
