I would like to introduce myself. My name is Ted Gillespie, and I am an artist who has lived and worked in St. Louis for many years. I have had works displayed at many local galleries as well as several other states, and most currently at a exhibition in Venice, Italy. I am a painter and sculptor creating found-object pieces and because of this, I consider my work to be environmentally, culturally and politically inspired.
With the fighting and destruction going on in Ukraine, more than 2.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes with nothing more than what they can carry, and, in many cases, families are separated from each other. Many of these people are fleeing to our shores and I would like to create a piece to show our support and solidarity.
I would like to propose the creation of a large installation piece to represent Light, Love & Freedom in honor of the people of Ukraine who are suffering through in this uncertain time. This installation piece will stand over 30 feet high and will include a burned up, shot up and ripped up the life-size minivan, black metal sunflowers rising up, growing through the roof of the vehicle and at the top a huge beautiful Sunflower with a continuous burning torch representing and leading the light to freedom. Every person that gives a donation no matter how much, I will personally and proudly write your name on the body of the vehicle. This sculpture will have its unveiling in St. Louis and hopefully find a permanent home outside a museum or sculpture park near you.
I am asking for your help in showing our love and support from the United States as well as from all over the world to the people of Ukraine with this incredible sculpture of healing. Thank you for your attention and support, and should you have any questions, please contact me.
