Rocket Stoves 4 Haiti

Donation protected
Rocket stoves are a technological upgrade that through efficiency, can improve the quality of life, economic viability and sustainable natural resource use of owners. 10.85 million people live in Haiti. The vast majority cook with wood and charcoal. The land is deforested, leading to depleted soil, erosion, drying wells, silt and reduced fisheries. The people caught in the poverty of resource depletion.

The objective of this GoFundMe is to support the next step of RocketStoves4Haiti's work in aiding the people of Belle Ance, Haiti to locally developing Rocket Stove technology and sustainable agroforestry practices in their community.

At a church and junior high school In January of 2018, RocketStoves4Haiti demonstrated Rocket Stoves to the community of Belle Ance, a small, isolated, coastal town in Southeast Haiti. We demonstrated the operation of the stove and explained the scientific principles and design criteria behind the stove. There was a high degree of interest and excitement for the idea, especially when they saw how rapidly the water boiled with just a few twigs. Rocket Stoves and Tree Planting were seen as a practical way to return natural economic viability to the community.

The funds will be used to cover expenses:

1) Logistics, travel, tools, and materials to initiate the testing phase of various Rocket Stoves within the community of Belle Ance. The approximately ~10 prototype stoves will be made from a combination of materials available in Haiti and Michigan.

2) The effort includes an opportunity to meet with the Haitian outpost of Sadhana Forest, an environmental justice award winning reforestation and economic development organization out of India, to collect information necessary to developing a successful Tree Planting program in Belle Ance, Haiti.

Rocket Stove Idea:

*A Rocket Stove is stove designed to cook conveniently with very little wood. A technological upgrade that allows for cooking with twigs.
*Twigs to a very limited extent can be harvested in the Belle Ance area now.
*Because twigs can be harvested without killing the tree and are harvestable fairly rapidly after tree planting, and the economic need for fuel, Tree Planting presents near immediate economic gain.
Tree planting by holding the soil and water reverse the trend of soil depletion, erosion, water loss and environmental destruction. Fertility is increased. This is good for people as we are soil and water.
*Rocket Stoves and Tree Planting are technologies that the people of Belle Ance, Haiti can develop, produce, and disseminate throughout the Belle Ance region. The challenges to this are great but not insurmountable, even in a town where just getting a nut and bolt can be a challenge.
*Return2Haiti is committed to do whatever we can to collaborate with the People of Belle Ance, Haiti to overcome these challenges.

Brief background of Haiti:
The soil of Haiti is devastated. The people of Haiti are living on the edge of survival. Ever a struggle for meals and a roof. The people are amazingly resilient, the culture dynamic. They know they are caught in the slow descent of resource depletion. You don't have to tell a fisherman that the catch is smaller. The primary cooking fuel available is wood on open fires or purchased charcoal in a land deforested. Sufficient fresh water is an issue and wells are drying up and being salinated. I was fortunate to meet many good hearted people living in the midst of a very difficult situation.
