Robeson: The Opera

Donation protected
Trilogy: An Opera Company (TAOC) presents opera and art related to this genre that is reflective of the world in which we live. TAOC focuses on the works of African American composers written on subject matter reflecting the experience of people of African descent.

Trilogy: An Opera Company invites your support of the first opera ever on Paul Robeson by famed American composer Adolphus Hailstork. The work, written in word by award winning director and playwright Shaunelle Perry, takes place in four areas important to the understanding and work of Paul Robeson; The Theater, The Church, The Ballroom, and The U.S. Senate. We will highlight the significance of these places in his quest to gain respect for he and his people.

A preview performance of Robeson took place in August 2013 in Newark, NJ. Over 700 people attended the preview performance, which was free and open to the public. Excerpts of the opera were also featured in the "Robeson Remembered" recital by Kevin Maynor at New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in November 2013 to an audience of over 400 people. Both performances received standing ovations.

In December 2013, Trilogy announced a new added section to the opera "ROBESON". The new addition moves the opera to an important new level of significance. T
he expanded opera includes selected sections from the original transcripts of the Senate un-American committee which accused Robeson of being a communist.

We are in need of your support right now as we must increase our forces on stage and in the orchestra for the world premier, which will take place in 2014.

We have chosen this figure, Paul Robeson, because of what he means to all Americans and people all over the world. Paul Robeson built his life around excellence and caring. He is recognized for his world travel and concern for workers and the least of us. During this very difficult period in the lives of people all over the planet and particularly, America, we felt it important to do a wonderful piece on a man who fought for the rights of the down trodden.

Trilogy: An Opera company is working hard to ensure new and enlightening information on Paul Robeson and his life. His fight against the principles of war and hatred around race and creed will be evident. His love for humankind is more than evident in his own writings and prominent in the libretto by Shaunele Perry, set to music by Mr. Hailstork. The music, while aggressive and complex, is taken from the great spirituals and folk songs of black people and the world and will enjoy lovely moments of simplicity and familiarity to all those who remember and have heard of Paul Robeson. There will be no absence of excellence in every musical way. Every part of the community will have an opportunity to study and learn from this work.

This project is the start of many more all inclusive works relative to the struggle of humankind, to build reservoirs of love and sensibility, important to the greatest and least of us entangled in this "web" of common struggle and absolute dependency....

"We can make clear what peaceful coexistence means. It means living in peace and friendship with another kind of society--a fully integrated society where the people control their destinies, where poverty and illiteracy have been eliminated, and where new kinds of human beings develop in the framework of a new level of social living." - Paul Robeson

Paul led the way.
