Roberta McKinney - A True Warrior

There comes a time in life when any one of us could use a helping hand or a serious lifeline. This time arrived for our dear friend Roberta Bailey McKinney. Roberta is rising to fight her recent and third breast cancer diagnosis, received in August. Her first cancer diagnosis, grueling treatment and surgery happened in 2000. The second in 2014 followed with a hard fought battle of chemotherapy and surgery. Now Roberta courageously prepares for her third ordeal to defeat another cancer health challenge. Not only were the physical and emotional demands of each painful cancer journey unbearable, but the downward cycle of loss, tremendous financial and emotional hardship has progressively taken its’ toll.
Story of a True Warrior's Battle . . .
In May of 2017 unexpected cancer news arrived to the McKinney’s once again. However, this time it was her husband Lynn who was diagnosed with lung cancer. Far too familiar with the demands of treatment and recovery, Roberta’s focus quickly shifted to prioritizing Lynn’s fierce and demanding battle which shockingly ended in a brief, two month illness taking his life at the end of July. She and Ben, her only child who is autistic, were left shattered, broken hearted, almost paralyzed by overwhelming grief and fear.
Within days after Lynn’s passing, Roberta received confirmation of her worst fear: Diagnosis Cancer. Third time. It appears at this time that it is confined to a localized area. The treatment plan is comprised of compounded drug therapy and an intense six-week daily radiation regime.
Since Roberta’s first two diagnoses, she and her husband had already endured immense financial hardship caused by the loss of employment for both, recovery down time, medical costs and living expenses. Lynn’s passing only magnified the intensity of her situation in every way imaginable.
Devastating discoveries ensued as Roberta began assuming her husband’s responsibilities as head of household. She quickly realized that Lynn’s illness had compromised his ability to keep up with financial obligations. Mortgage payments lapsed and their home was literally on the brink of foreclosure. Debts continued to mount while resources ran dry.
In a state of grief, facing her own terrifying diagnosis, Roberta’s fighting spirit found a way to rise again. With pure determination and support from a family member, she managed to forestall foreclosure and retain the house.
How can you help change a life?
This campaign fund is to provide financial support during Roberta’s treatment and recovery. Outside of her healthcare coverage, she faces a high deductible and co-pays, prescription drug costs, alternative care treatments, and like anyone else, ongoing monthly living expenses.
Friends since the 70’s, we have enjoyed working and singing together, and have maintained a close sisterly friendship for decades. Roberta is a very caring, creative, hardworking and resilient soul. She has always pulled her own weight, even when it was damn near impossible, and never asked for help.
It’s my personal honor, commitment to my bond and close friendship with Roberta, to say: I am humbly reaching out and asking for help for her and Ben during these extremely tough times.
