Financial help thru my stage 3 colon cancer
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Robert Demers; I am a 47-year-old father of 3, a husband, software developer, and full-time soccer enthusiast. Less than a year ago, I became aware of a colonoscopy procedure that screens the colon for cancer. After finding out the procedure's cost, I decided that I could not afford it. Around the same time, my wife was offered a less invasive and cheaper alternative called Cologuard, and due to the affordability, I decided to move forward with this option. Three weeks after my submission I received a positive result, which meant I needed to receive the colonoscopy procedure for more exact results. On Friday, September 30th, 2022, I was taken in for my colonoscopy and was informed that they had found a 3 centimeter in diameter tumor on my colon. It was later determined that this tumor was also cancerous. Thus, the results from my biopsy were released to me on October 4th, 2022, my 47th birthday, and it was confirmed that I had cancer and would need to remove the tumor immediately. Shortly after, I was able to set up the surgery on Monday, October 17th, 2022, with Dr. Connaughton. In just three hours, Dr. Connaughton successfully removed a foot of my colon, which contained the tumor, and 17 lymph nodes that would need additional testing. Upon further testing, they revealed that one of the lymph nodes had come back positive with cancer, indicating that I would need to proceed with chemotherapy. I spent five days in the hospital recovering from the initial surgery, in which I had to learn how to digest food again and relayed the news about stage 3 cancer. Following four to six weeks post-op, I will be working towards regaining the strength and normalcy prior to my surgery; then, I can begin the next phase, which includes the 6 months of Folfox chemotherapy. This has posed an extreme challenge when adjusting to life with my family, everyday tasks, and even my job. Before my surgery, I also spent extensive time supporting my son in his soccer dreams, my other son’s basketball and goalie interests, and my passion for playing indoor and outdoor futbol. I was hoping to garner support during these challenging times from people willing to help me, even though I might not have always been so open to receiving help in the past. This may come in monetary value, advice, resources, or even prayers, but I appreciate any kind of support. The money collected thru GoFundMe will be used to cover medical expenses such as premiums, deductibles, medicines, insurance limits, and lost income from fewer hours worked during these chemo treatments. Thank you again for any support; I apologize if I do not have time to reach out to you to express my gratitude because I will be stepping back to take more time to focus on my family and health thru this difficult journey.
