Ride to the Red

Tax deductible
What:
A 250-mile bike ride starting in Indianapolis, Indiana and concluding in Slade, Kentucky specifically finishing through the historic Nada Tunnel.

Why:
As an avid rock climber and cyclist, riding to the Red River Gorge Kentucky from my home in Indianapolis has been a personal goal for many years now. While it was discussed time and time again, it’s time for the stories of 'how cool it would be' to end and actually get to talk about how amazing (or miserable) it really was!

After discussions with a few close friends, I’ve decided to simply go for it and what better way than to support a charity in the process. Each year, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation holds an annual ride to raise money to find a cure for such a devastating disease. For those unaware of what CF is, listen up....

CF is a genetic disorder that primarily affects mucus, sweat, and digestive fluids causing them to become thick and sticky. This can lead to a plethora of adverse health effects such as chronic coughing, lung infections, digestive issues and / or pulmonary hypertension. As I mentioned this is a genetic disorder so those affected most are young children. In 1959, the average survival rate of children with CF was only 6 months! Over half a century later, the average life expectancy in the US is almost 40 years. While this is a vast improvement, the CF Foundation is committed to finding a cure for this disease and will not stop its mission until 'all people with the disease [have] the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment, and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care.'

When:
Based on the rainy conditions in the spring, the ride will take place on the first nice weekend in April.  I plan to complete the ride in less than 48 hours starting early Saturday morning covering close to 160 miles on day one and finishing on Sunday the remaining 80 miles.

Where:
The trip will start from the center of Indianapolis at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument and conclude with a cruise through the historic Nada Tunnel. Most of this journey will be on country back roads connecting through a few towns along the way.

The first stop on the route will be Shelbyville (Mile 30) followed by a roll through Greensburg (Mile 40). The next section will take me along the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge (Mile 80) to the Indiana-Kentucky boarder (Mile 100). Once in the bluegrass state, the winding backroads will take me through numerous small towns including Carrollton, Worthville, Perry Park, Gratz, and Monterey before arriving in Georgetown (Mile 150). Form there, Lexington is only a stone’s throw away (Mile 170) followed by the last 'major' town Winchester (Mile 190). From there it’s a 40-mile trip along the Bert T Combs Mnt Parkway to Slade. Once in the Red River Gorge, it’s just a few more miles of scenic hills to take me the remaining 10 miles through the Nada Tunnel.

According to Google, this is a 242-mile trip, but let’s face it I’m going to get lost a time or two so we'll round to 250 miles total.

Now What?
We need your help and donations to combat this disorder to improve the lives and well-being of future children. ALL donations from this campaign will go directly to the CF Foundation. The ride itself is fully supported and funded personally… But... for a little more incentive on meeting my goal, I have thrown a few challenges into the mix.
     Donations:
Pledge only 10 cents per mile = $25.00
Pledge only 10 cents per kilometer = $40.20
Pledge only 25 cents per mile = $62.50
          Pledge only 25cents per kilometer = $100.50
          Pledge 1 cent per foot = $13,200   :)

Challenges:
Based on the donations received by the time of the ride, I will stop in a few of the cities for a bonus challenge.

For $500 Raised: BIG WINNER - I will stop in Shelbyville (Mile 40) at the Indiana Grand casino and bet $1 for each donation received on one spin at the Roulette Table (it’s all going on Red if you were curious). If we win, the whole pot will be donated to the CF Foundation!

For $1,000 Raised: DOUBLE DIP - If we reach this milestone, I will take a dip in the Ohio River (Mile 100) as I cross the border into Kentucky! And yes, as the name suggests, I’ll be doing it twice, once from the Indiana side and again on the Kentucky side. (Let’s hope the weather isn’t too cold or this may turn into a polar plunge.)

For $1,500 Raised: BACK TO COLLEGE - Turns out there is a beautiful historic college in Georgetown started back in 1829. What better way than to celebrate 3/4 completion of the journey and our goal with a drink! If we reach this milestone, I'll shotgun a beer while on campus. (Oh yeah, of course it’s going to be a BL).

For $2,000 Raised: YOUTUBE STAR - If we reach the goal I will film the entire journey with check ins throughout including all other challenges. I will edit all the footage together for a short video journal of the entire trip! The video will be posted to YouTube so everyone can witness (and laugh at) all the fun, serenity, shenanigans, and suffering.

Oh yeah... for those wondering, I will have a ride back to Indy... although... if we raise $4,000...
