Wheelchair Van for Stroke Patient



I am writing on behalf of my husband, Richard.

Rich is in need of a handicap van to improve his quality of life.  He has had 4 strokes in the last 2.5 years with the 3rd leaving him paralyzed except for limited use of his left arm and hand. He is able to comprehend and verbalize but in a slower than usual manner (luckily he still has his sense of humor!) He is unable to sit up, roll or do any type of physical activity without assistance including transferring to a wheelchair.  He requires a Hoyer lift to put him in his chair. 

We do not have a van and need to depend on ambulettes to transport him to doctors’ appointments which is costly.  Besides eliminating transportation costs and working around others schedules, having a van would improve his quality of life by allowing him to take trips to places he was able to prior to the strokes, as he is currently confined to the house. 

I am 70 years old and cannot retire from my job as a teacher’s assistant in order to pay for the medical expenses which are not covered by insurances.  As a result, since he cannot be left alone I incur the added expense of a home health care aide for 4 hours a day.  Outside of that, I am his primary care taker 24/7 .

That cost and the cost of a van are overwhelming.  Any help would be appreciated with both of us being extremely grateful. 

He’s a good father, husband, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, son-in-law, uncle and friend and I want so much to increase his ability to experience life to his fullest.
