Intrinsic Usability Creating a A11y navigation App

Donation protected
Intrinsic Usability is a company founded by Zackery Hurtz who wanted to create a multiplatform navigation app for visually impaired travelers. During his time as a totally blind college student he desired a method for seamless navigation and access to informational signs. He started developing Reference Point Navigation while in earning his bachelor’s degree with the help of a team of fellow students. RPN is a proven prototype and is ready to be developed and used by the millions of users who could benefit from it.

RPN is designed to guide users through indoor and outdoor spaces like parks, entertainment venues, airports, hospitals, college and K through 12 campuses and cities. The app also provides access to every day signs and information giving the user the same information that sighted people can easily access.

If you need to leave an area do to a sudden emergency like fires or other unexpected events the app has several features to assist the user. It will use ADA accessible path ways or approved emergency routes to get the user to safety. If the user is lost or unable to move they can activate an emergency beacon which connects them with the locations security or police for further assistance.

RPN has been developed for a wide array of activities including visiting museums allowing users to get descriptions of the displays. The app can also be set up for shopping so the user can be lead directly to the items they’re looking for. Companies can use the app to guide users on tours or provide information for accessible travel. Users can leave helpful tips for other users and can submit updated information or suggestions on the go within the app.

RPN doesn’t need a constant connection to GPS and can guide users around in zones with no signal. The app uses an array of built in sensors and navigation techniques to tell the user where they are and what their next step is. It is built to provide the user the most UpToDate information and help the user find their way if they’re lost or in a new area.

Intrinsic Usability is a company devoted to creating accessible products and services for all users. We want to help close the vast unemployment gap for people with disabilities and build a community of accessibility and advocacy. We want to push the bounds of accessibility and want to set a new standard for mainstream inclusiveness. We use the Americans with Disabilities Act as a foundation and continue to show what true accessibility means.
