My name is Karen Arthur. I am a Fashion designer and sewing tutor. In 2015 I left my long teaching career to follow my dream to become a designer, creating beautiful handmade clothing for women, with an emphasis on vibrant colour. I started my business ReddskinUK www.reddskin.co.uk to enable me to help women who wanted to rediscover their love of fashion. But I have never lost my love of teaching.
My mother taught me to sew in my teen years during the mid seventies. . I thought it was because I had developed hay fever and, in those days ,common wisdom was to stay indoors. I needed something to do. I now realise in may have also been that I needed a distraction from her divorce and our shared love of creativity provided welcome respite. I took to sewing like a fish to water and it has served me well.
When I heard of RE:13 volunteer program it felt absolutely right for me to do. What use is knowledge and skill if not to pass it on to those who need it?
I have 40 years sewing experience and over 30 years teaching, 15 of those as a Pastoral leader. I have worked in schools and colleges around London, helping young people use their creativity. This opportunity is my purpose.
I will be sharing my passion in Zimbabwe with those who need it most to empower them to help their families and their community. It will be challenging and hard work and I'm excited about it!
RE:13 is a social enterprise using the concepts of recycling and enterprise to support the start-up aspirations of men and women in communities in Zimbabwe. Read more about the project and how we will help here http://13rhythms.com/projects/4593829150
I will be travelling to Zimbabwe with RE:13 in June 2018 for 4 weeks. The money raised goes directly to those costs - the figure on the page also covers GoFundme admin fees. I will need the funds by May 6th so there's not long to go!!
