Support Ravyn's Study Abroad in Athens

I was sitting in my Topics in Greek History class when a study abroad adviser began waxing poetic about educational opportunities for Portland State University students overseas. I have always thought that studying abroad would be the bee's knees, but I never thought I'd ever be able to go. It sounded complicated and expensive. "Studying abroad as an undergraduate was the single most important career decision I ever made," my professor said. Okay, okay! I applied.
Fast-forward one month later and I have been accepted to study in AHA International's Humanities program in Athens from March 23-June 14th, 2014. My program focuses on archaeology and theatre. If you've met me for more than 2 seconds, you probably know that these two subjects have been passions of mine for my entire life.
The great news? My financial aid and loans can be used towards the cost of the program. The bad news? It covers about 1/2 of my program fee.
Here is what the program fee pays for:
- Tuition - Excursions - Housing in shared apartments - Books and course materials - Medical insurance - International Student Identity Card - On-site orientation - Expert support pre-departure and on-site
In addition to raising money for the rest of my program fee, there are other costs that I need to cover in order to make this happen. I have taken the initiative to fund as much of the program as I possibly can. I have applied to all the scholarship opportunities I was able to find through the Portland State Study Abroad website. Even though I am a full-time student, I have also been working 30 hours a week to help cover costs. However, I am still lacking the funds I need to offset the costs of the trip.

Jeez, that's a mind-numbing number. Hence the reason I made this fundraiser. Studying in Athens is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I intend to utilize it to the fullest. I will get to stand in the Theatre of Dionysis, one of the first theatres in the world. I will get to see the site of the Oracle at Delphi. The Acropolis. The Parthenon. I will get to go to the archaeological sites of Mycenae and Tiryns. From our excursion website: "Mycenae and Tiryns are the imposing ruins of the two greatest cities of the Mycenaean civilization, which dominated the eastern Mediterranean world from the 15th to the 12th century B.C. and played a vital role in the development of classical Greek culture. These two cities are indissolubly linked to the Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, which have influenced European art and literature for more than three millennia."
This trip is will help to strengthen my foundation as I pursue a Masters in Archaeology after graduation this summer. I have chosen to opt for flexible funding, which means you can still donate to my education while I am in Athens. If you can spare anything, I would appreciate it deeply. I understand, however, that times are tough. (If they weren't, I wouldn't need this fundraiser in the first place!)
