Ruth's Story
On 2nd January 2014, Ruth Haslam suffered a basilar artery thrombosis at the age of 23 which cut off the blood flow to the back section of her brain. The stroke was catastrophic and resulted in Ruth being placed in an artificial coma to help her brain recover from the initial shock. In the days and weeks following her awakening, it soon became clear that Ruth was presenting with Locked-in Syndrome.
Lock-in Syndrome is a condition that leaves an individual entirely aware of their surroundings and what is being said to them, but unable to verbally respond and unable to move.
With the help of a fantastic medical team at Chapel Allerton hospital, intensive therapy and lots of love from family and friends, Ruth has regained substantial head-control and is working hard to regain control of her limbs. She communicates using a Tobii eye gaze device which allows her to type out words and sentences using her eyes.
The Aim
The aim is to help raise funds for any specialist equipment, therapy sessions and outings that will help Ruth on her long road to recovery.
