Raise for Rachel

Donation protected
At the start of  2021 Rachel was a healthy 35 year old wife and mum of two young boys with everything to live for. Working as a dedicated nurse in care homes for over a decade, Rachel worked tirelessly throughout the Pandemic.

Mid February, Rachel suddenly became ill and was taken into Stepping Hill Hospital with symptoms of a stroke.  After lots of investigations and tests a stroke was ruled out and an infection and inflamation of the brain was diagnosed. Unsure of the cause  doctors treated her with steroid medications , none of which seemed to help. After a long wait at Stepping Hill she was transferred to Salford Royal Hospital where she was assessed by specialists.

The family were told Rachel had developed  Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM).
ADEM is a rare inflammatory condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. This is the result of the immune system becoming mis-programmed, and activating immune cells to attack the healthy myelin cells covering the nerves.  Rachel quickly lost her speech , movement down one side and was disoriented , and extremely confused.  She was given  Plasmapheresis , a plasma exchange treatment to replace her white blood cells and give her immune system a chance to fight back.

After weeks of being all alone in the hospital, unable to have her family by her side she took a turn for the worse. The plasma exchange had not been successful. Her condition was still deteriorating and she began having uncontrollable seizures. Rachel was put into a medically induced coma and was started on a new treatment for Multiple Sclerosis. She spent 2 weeks in Intensive Care on a ventilator. On Wednesday 24th March the family we're told that Rach had developed a very rare aggressive form of MS and that nothing more could be done to help her. Rachel spent a total of 46 days in hospital.  On 3rd April 2021 Rachel passed away peacefully with her husband Kevin and her mum Jane by her side.

As no regular visits were allowed due to Covid, it has been extremely difficult for her family and friends to come to terms with, especially her two boys.....

The family are so thankful for all the love and well wishes that have been shown. Rachel is clearly loved by so many as the offers of help have been overwhelming.

No family should have the worry of added financial pressures or the dread of losing their home after suffering such a shattering loss to their young family.  This fundraiser has been set up to support the boys in navigating through this immediate difficult period as well as coming to terms of life without their beautiful mum.
